We are looking for a Senior Scientist who will be responsible for running and improving the SATAVIA NWP model and will work closely with the product and development teams to integrate weather analysis into core DECISIONX products. Our NWP model runs on high-performance-compute in the cloud. This role, therefore, has a strong focus on cloud engineering tools and concepts.

Main Responsibilities

The Senior Scientist will be responsible for:

  *   Running SATAVIA’s NWP model
  *   Visualising climate model output and other datasets
  *   Maintaining operational forecast system
  *   Maintaining operational forecast webpages
  *   Publish research in peer reviewed journal articles



Requirements

Essential

  *   MSc (PhD if no industry experience) in atmospheric science with a track record of at least some relevant scientific publications
  *   Solid commercial experience (in industry) of working as a Scientist or a similar role
  *   Solid experience of using numerical weather prediction models (particularly WRF)
  *   Demonstrable knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems and bash scripting
  *   Demonstrable knowledge and skills in programming languages (in particular Fortran) and visualization languages (ideally Python and libraries including xarray and pandas)
  *   Solid experience with data processing, database programming, and data analytics, including experience with validating climate model output with meteorological observations (in situ and remotely-sensed) and other climatological data sets
  *   Familiarity with gridded climate data formats (e.g. netCDF, GRIB, zarr etc.)
  *   Basic knowledge of parallel programming on HPC architectures
  *   HTML (or similar web-based programming)
  *   Strong communication skills and the ability work with external partners and clients as needed
  *   Flexibility to work shifts (as and when needed)



Desirable

  *   Experience and working knowledge of MPAS would be beneficial
  *   Experience with Microsoft Azure Cloud systems (e.g., Azure Cyclecloud)
  *   Experience with running operational forecasting systems
  *   Strong background in tropospheric dynamics, fluid dynamics, and/or cloud microphysics
  *   Willingness to travel internationally, if and when required
