[ES_JOBS_NET] Hydrologic Forecasting Associate Scientist position at NCAR (Boulder, CO)

Andy Wood andywood at ucar.edu
Thu Dec 23 09:23:17 MST 2021

*Location: *Boulder, CO.
Type: Full time, exempt, two-year term.
Application Deadline: This position will be posted until filled.

*Where You Will Work:*

The Climate and Global Dynamics Laboratory (CGD) is part of the National
Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The position is in the CGD
Terrestrial Sciences Section (TSS; see https://www.cgd.ucar.edu/sections/)

What You Will Do:

This position will conduct research and development focusing on advancing
stakeholder-relevant hydrologic prediction science. The Scientist will
support two projects, both of which involve implementing and enhancing
models and methods to generate hydrologic and streamflow forecasts. The
work will also leverage earth system observations, numerical weather
prediction and climate forecasts. The first project will demonstrate the
science through building out an experimentally-operational regional
hydrologic prediction system for the Pacific Northwest, in partnership with
the managing agency (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) and other partners and
stakeholders. The second project will use similar science to establish a
western-US oriented snow modeling and data assimilation system to benchmark
the value of new datasets, models and techniques for sub-seasonal to
seasonal hydrologic prediction, working with science groups and the Bureau
of Reclamation. The research will center on two process-oriented models
primarily -- SUMMA and CTSM (Community Terrestrial Systems Model) -- and
involve model development as well as implementation and analysis, running
models in uncertainty-aware (ensemble) frameworks, and analyzing and
improving forecasts through supporting techniques such as parameter
estimation and data assimilation.

The researcher will also help in the development or processing of
multi-variate observational datasets include *in situ* and remotely sensed
observations.

Requirements:

   - Bachelor’s (or equivalent) in hydrological, atmospheric,
   meteorological or related science.
   - Physical modeling and programming experience
