POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW APPOINTMENTS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

Postdoctoral positions in Climate and Climate-Chemistry Atmospheric Modeling and Analysis

Two new Postdoctoral Research Associate positions are available working with Professor Donald Wuebbles in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

A postdoctoral research fellow appointment focused on regional climate modeling and climate downscaling analyses is available.  This is a one-year appointment with the potential for renewal, pending external research grant funding (the university standard is to do one year appointments but more than one year of funding is already available). This position entails state-of-the-art research studies with the WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) Model at high spatial resolution that will be applied to all of North America. The resulting downscaled climate datasets will also be applied to initial climate risk and resilience analyses. The person accepted should ha

ve experience in climate modeling and experience in running large simulations on high performance computing environments. Experience with acquisition and analysis of climate model output is also important.

A postdoctoral research fellow appointment focused on modeling and analyses of global atmospheric composition and climate is available. This is a one-year appointment with high possibility for renewal, depending on performance and pending external research grant funding (more than one year of support is already available). The position entails state-of-the-art research with the CESM and WACCM models for studies of the impacts of human activities on atmospheric composition and climate, specifically to investigate the impacts of aviation, rockets, and new chemicals on global atmospheric composition and corresponding effects on climate forcing. This research is impactful in guiding national and international policy on aviation-related environmental impacts. The person accepted should have experience in atmospheric modeling, and it will be useful to have strong knowledge of both atmospheric physics and chemistry. The research will involve setting up the model on high performance computing environments, conducting simulation experiments, analyzing the resulting impacts on atmospheric composition and climate, and writing research papers and presenting the results at major science meetings. Experience with acquisition and analysis of reanalysis, climate, and composition observations and model datasets is also important.

The appointees will be interacting with experts in modeling of atmospheric chemistry and physics, and climate analyses, but he or she should also be able to conduct research responsibilities independently. Nonetheless, the appointees can be expected to receive regular guidance and mentoring.  The salary is negotiable but is expected to be about $55,000 plus benefits from the University. Along with the recommended qualifications mentioned above, it is essential that the candidates have received a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or in a closely related field.  Other highly desirable qualifications include excellent written and oral communication. These positions are available immediately, but applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled.
