CleanAIRE NC (CANC) is an advocacy organization working for clean air and
climate change solutions since 2003. With offices in Charlotte and the
Triangle, our mission is to advocate for the health of all North
Carolinians by pursuing equitable and collaborative solutions that address
climate change and air pollution.
PROGRAM BACKGROUND
CANC’s Citizen Science Program is one of the most highly regarded in the
country for its establishment of a statewide network of PM2.5 air sensors,
its partnerships and data sharing with universities and government for
research purposes, and its use of education and advocacy to advance clean
air solutions. The principal component of the Citizen Science Program is
known as AirKeepers, <https://cleanaircarolina.org/airkeepers/> which
refers to those individuals and organizations hosting air sensors.
POSITION
The Citizen Science Program Manager builds and maintains a statewide
network of diverse organizational partners, public agencies and individuals
to advance CANC’s AirKeepers Program, and provides technical resources and
data for researchers, policymakers, health professionals, and educators to
advance CleanAIRE NC’s mission.
TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prioritize and implement recommendations from 2020 citizen science
network review including tasks related to: monitor maintenance,
distribution, data management and more.
- Collect, analyze, visualize and communicate relevant data about air
quality and climate issues to diverse audiences.
- Assist partners in technical aspects of air monitors, data
interpretation, mapping, reporting, and other relevant interests.
- Facilitates meetings and develops communication materials related to
training and workshops
- Track and maintain an inventory of air monitors and other equipment
related to the AirKeepers Program.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Pilot and replicate PM2.5 “cluster-networks”. These are 10-15 monitors
located in a community around an emission source in NC.
- Cultivate relationships with diverse stakeholders to further CANC’s
Citizen Science Programs.
- Manage the Citizen Science Advisory Board and use it to help assess
and guide the Citizen Science Program.
- Keep up to date with developments in citizen science via Citizen
Science Association, new literature, etc.
- Collaborate with CANC staff to further the Citizen Science Program
including identifying collaborations and grant opportunities with health,
policy, environmental justice, communication and development managers.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with community research or environmental outreach
programs and directly with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically
diverse backgrounds.
- Experience facilitating and leading meetings.
- Proven project management skills to be able to plan, direct, and
coordinate all details within each program assigned.
- Ability to translate complex scientific information into language that
all audiences can understand.
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge and experience using Excel, GIS,
and data management.
- High level of comfort with technology including Microsoft Office, G
Suite, project management applications, and Zoom.
- High degree of organization and independence to manage multiple
ongoing priorities simultaneously.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to present
to diverse audiences.
- Experience in policy advocacy or speaking with public officials
preferred
- Degree in environmental science, applied sciences or related field or
equivalent education and/or 3-5 years of experience desired.
WORK SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION
This full-time (40 hours per week) position requires occasional evening
meetings, weekend work, and overnight travel. CleanAIRE NC offers a
competitive compensation package to include medical, dental & vision
coverage, paid-time-off (PTO), 403(b), company paid holidays, cell phone
allowance, and parental leave.
Preferably, this position will be based in our Triangle office (Research
Triangle Park, NC), but is remote during the COVID-19 pandemic until
further notice.
