MS or PhD Position in Igneous Geochemistry at the University of Hawai’i
Research Topic: Early Evolution of the Hawaiian Plume from the Geochemistry and Geochronology of Basalts Spanning the Entire Emperor Seamount Chain
The Department of Earth Sciences (ES) at the University of Hawai’i (UH-Mānoa in Honolulu) is searching for a student to work as a Graduate Assistant on an NSF-funded research project to understand the oldest (~80-50 Ma) and most enigmatic volcanoes of the Hawaiian-Emperor Chain using the geochemistry (major and trace elements, and Pb-Sr-Nd-Hf isotope ratios) of basalt samples from the Emperor Seamounts.
Applications will be considered to the MS or PhD program in the ES Department at UH-Mānoa. The ideal candidate will have research experience in geochemistry or analytical chemistry, and a willingness to learn and work in a cleanroom environment. Attention to detail is a critical skill for the successful candidate. This project does not involve field work, but students at UH-Mānoa have many opportunities to participate in local field trips on the Islands of Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi.
The Graduate Assistant will pursue their degree as part of the ES Department in the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology (SOEST) at UH-Mānoa (http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/index.html) and will be advised by Dr. Aaron Pietruszka. Additional opportunities may include the mentoring of local high school or community college students and working as a Teaching Assistant (TA) to gain professional teaching experience.
The deadline to apply is January 15, 2022 and the expected starting date is Fall Semester in August 2022. Application instructions are provided on the website of the ES Department (http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/academics/es_phd.html). Potential applicants should contact Aaron Pietruszka (apietrus at hawaii.edu) in advance to learn more about the project and the graduate program at UH-Mānoa. The ES Department at UH-Mānoa is actively seeking to increase the diversity of its student population (http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/jedi/huliamahi.html). We especially welcome students from underrepresented or minoritized groups (Black, Latinx, Indigenous and/or LGBTQ+) to apply for this position.
