Description
Job Description
The Department of Natural Sciences at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Geology to begin August 2022. The individual hired for this position will teach 3-4 courses per semester, advise students, supervise senior theses and internships, provide service to the college and community, and stay professionally active. Opportunities and support are available for the successful candidate to pursue independent research involving undergraduate students.
Requirements
We are committed to excellence in teaching, mentoring undergraduates, and scholarship. A Ph.D. is required, and teaching experience is strongly preferred. We seek candidates with expertise in the broad area of hydrology and surficial geology, preferably with expertise in interactions of ground and surface water with soil and rock, and processes involving Quaternary deposits. Preference will be given to candidates with strong potential to involve undergraduates in research, and to candidates with strong potential for community engagement. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to teach at both NVU campuses (Lyndon and Johnson).
Teaching Responsibilities
Teaching responsibilities will include introductory and advanced courses for science majors, and courses that serve general education. Specific courses would include an introductory-level geology course suitable for environmental science and climate science programs, and for the general education curriculum. Upper-level courses will depend on the successful candidate’s expertise and interests. One or more courses should include basic geology field techniques.
The successful candidate will be a member of a collaborative interdisciplinary department of faculty in ecology, environmental chemistry, physics, and biology. We are in the process of evaluating our programs to strengthen connections in the curricula among our disciplines and across the institution as we expand our reach and merge with two other institutions of higher education in the state of Vermont.
Application Process
Applicants should include: 1) letter of application that describes their teaching experience, professional work, and includes a reflection on the candidate’s potential to contribute to an inclusive environment through teaching, research, and service; 2) curriculum vitae; 3) teaching statement that describes the candidate’s pedagogy; 4) description of proposed research and integration of undergraduates with the project; and 5) the names and contact information of three references.
