Please circulate - thanks!

Dr. Esther Mullens, Department of Geography, university of Florida is seeking a PhD student, for a Spring or Fall 2022 start, for the NSF-Funded project entitled “Thermodynamic Modification of Winter Storms” . The research will apply high-resolution regional climate models and/or new model output to examine mixed-phase winter storms in a warmer climate. We will examine the evolution of historically occurring mixed-phase winter (ice) storms, thermodynamically modified by climate change, and to disaggregate them into characteristic synoptic evolutions. Output from this work is intended to improve our understanding of multi-phase winter weather systems in warmer climates, and to produce information and products relevant to researchers and decision-makers for which freezing precipitation is of particular concern. The PhD student will have the opportunity to attend conferences, publish papers, and mentor undergraduate and precollegiate students.

Qualifications:

Required Skills

  * A Master’s degree in Meteorology, Geography, or related areas, with a focus on atmospheric science, climate science, and/or applied computer programming
  * Experience using R, Python, NCL or similar, and a Linux/UNIX environment.
  * Good written and oral communication

Desirable Skills

  * One or more peer-reviewed publications in the discipline, or evidence of presentations/dissemination of work at regional-national conferences or workshops.
  * Use of large datasets, including output from weather and/or climate models
  * Ability to apply machine learning techniques or other advanced statistics to data analysis
  *   Experience in high-performance computing (e.g., supercomputer).
