We are currently looking to hire a postdoctoral research fellow to help us
improve our capabilities in wildfire emission science, in particular in the
forecasting of wildfire propagation, intensity and behavior. Our group in
NOAA's Air Resources Laboratory and George Mason University performs
research in support of the National Weather Service's National Air Quality
Forecasting Capability (NAQFC; https://airquality.weather.gov/). We seek a
postdoctoral researcher to help us improve wildfire emissions predictions
in NAQFC over its 72 hour forecast period.

Applications can be made at

https://jobs.gmu.edu/postings/51157

and will continue until a suitable candidate is identified. For full
consideration, please apply by August 30, 2021.

*Postdoctoral Research Fellow*
The George Mason University, Center for Spatial Information Science and
Systems (CSISS) in collaboration with the NOAA Air Resources Laboratory
(ARL) are seeking applicants for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the
Cooperative Institute of Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) to work
with the Chemical Modeling & Emissions group at ARL in the NOAA Center for
Weather & Climate Prediction (NCWCP) in College Park, MD. George Mason has
a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and
diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates
to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive
environment.

*Responsibilities:*
The incumbent will perform research related to improving the modeling of
fire emissions incorporated into NOAA weather and air quality forecast
models, including multi-day fire behavior and propagation, fire
characterization and emissions speciation. A certain level of experience in
wildfire research and familiarity with atmospheric chemistry and air
quality modeling using models such as CMAQ, WRF-Chem, GEOS-Chem or other
similar 3-D models are also expected. The selected candidate will also
publish results of their research in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals
and make clear, professional presentations at major conferences, seminars
and other internal NOAA meetings.

*Required Qualifications:*
PhD in Atmospheric Sciences or related field prior to the first day in the
position;
Excellent written and oral communication skills;
Experience in atmospheric chemistry modeling and/or fire emission science;
Experience in model development;
Experience in HPC environments.

*Preferred Qualifications:*
Strong Programming skills in Fortran and Python;
Strong visualization skills;
Experience in model evaluation using ground-based and aircraft data and/or
satellite data.

*Special Instructions to Applicants *
