Post-Doctoral Fellow, Canada Oil & Gas Emissions<https://www.edf.org/jobs/post-doctoral-fellow-canada-oil-gas-emissions>

Environmental Defense Fund's Office of the Chief Scientist seeks a recent Ph.D. recipient with proven research, analysis, and writing skills to work collaboratively with EDF and external scientists on a science and advocacy campaign<https://www.edf.org/media/new-initiative-will-map-and-measure-methane-emissions-across-permian-basin> to quantify methane emissions from oil and gas industry in Canada and communicate results through both rapid, public release of data and submission of peer-reviewed publications.

Project Background
EDF has set an ambitious goal to achieve a 45% cut in global methane pollution from the Oil and Gas supply chain by 2025 in an effort to reduce the rate of warming we will experience over the next 20 years, equivalent to closing one third of the world's coal fired power plants. In line with this, Canada- a major oil and gas producer- has published ambitious methane emission regulations at the federal and provincial level.

EDF is coordinating a multi-scale measurement campaign to characterize oil and gas methane emissions across provinces, providing policy-relevant data that allows stakeholders to assess if the Canadian regulations are having impact on overall emission reductions and identifying additional mitigation opportunities.

Overall Function
The Post-Doctoral Fellow, Canada Oil & Gas Emissions will work on quantifying methane emissions across Canadian provinces and derive deliverables from the data. The deliverables will be in the form of public release of analyzed data as well as peer-reviewed publications. The Fellow will work with EDF's Office of the Chief Scientist on the Canada oil and gas emission measurement campaign and report to a Senior Scientist in the Office of the Chief Scientist.

Qualifications

*        A recent Ph.D. in atmospheric science, statistics, or a related field;

*        Knowledge about oil and gas industry infrastructure, operations and methane emissions;

* Strong quantitative analysis skills and knowledge in statistics; preference for proficiency in Python or a similar language allowing analysis of large data sets.

*        Proficiency in geospatial analyses with ArcGIS or other software;

*        Experience in performing rigorous analysis with short deadlines in support of highly visible work;

* The ability to communicate complex ideas in writing and orally to multiple stakeholders with different levels of expertise, including the public and O&G operators.
