The Advanced Instrumentation Specialist manages a suite of chromatography
and mass spectrometry instruments that support teaching and research
activities in the Department of Chemistry and across Bucknell University.

Job Duties:
Primary Responsibilities:
- operate, maintain, and manage the usage of chromatography and mass
spectrometry instruments in the Department of Chemistry, notably including
modern high-resolution (Orbitrap) and tandem (IM-Q-ToF) atmospheric
pressure ionization mass spectrometers.
- execute and/or arrange for service and repair of instruments as needed
- train users (students and faculty) on the use of chromatography and MS
instruments
- facilitate and support faculty/student research projects by applying
analytical techniques available in the department
- occasionally conduct analysis of submitted samples
- provide support for technique selection and application, method
development, comprehension of technical results, data interpretation, and
troubleshooting
- establish and execute a data management plan for chromatography and mass
spectrometry instruments
- facilitate occasional access to instrumentation for researchers from
other institutions in the region
- provide support for GC, LC, and MS instrumentation use in teaching labs
- maintain availability to work with students and faculty during
conventional work hours
Additional Responsibilities and Development Opportunities:
- support and maintain other analytical instruments in the Department of
Chemistry, as needed
- collaborate with faculty on developing and delivering lab curricula using
advanced instrumentation
- collaborate on grant-seeking to acquire and enhance departmental
instrumentation
- opportunity to teach up to 1 course credit per year in an area of
expertise, based on availability and interest
- engage with opportunities to attend meetings, workshops, and/or
short-courses applicable to instrument maintenance, method development,
relevant new techniques, data analysis, and professional development
Minimum Qualifications:
* Ph.D. in analytical chemistry or a related field, or a master’s degree
and at least 3 years of relevant experience
* Experience in the operation and maintenance of chromatography and mass
spectrometry instruments
* Willingness to proactively engage in professional development and learn
new skills
* Strong organizational abilities
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills
* Enthusiasm for engaging with Bucknell’s commitment to teaching, learning,
and scholarship
* Ability to foster a productive and cooperative environment with the goal
of providing exceptional educational opportunities through experiential
learning
* Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse community of faculty, lab
directors, students, and staff.
* Ability to read and understand chemical safety and hygiene plans
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience with the following techniques and associated software
packages: ion mobility/mass spectrometry, Agilent LC/Q-ToF, Thermo
Scientific LC/Orbitrap, Advion MS, Agilent GC/MS with thermal desorption,
Agilent HPLC, and Agilent GC
* Experience with additional analytical instruments and techniques (e.g.,
UV-Vis, fluorescence, FT-IR, autotitrators)
* Facility with electronic equipment, power tools, and hand tools
Physical Demands:
This position may involve lifting objects of 25 lbs, and may occasionally
involve lifting objects weighing 50 lbs.

About the Department of Chemistry:
The Department of Chemistry at Bucknell University is composed of 15
tenure-track faculty and 7 staff, offering Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of
Science, Master of Arts, and Master of Science degree programs. Educational
and scholarly activities are student-centered, with a strong focus on
undergraduate research. Chemistry faculty and students routinely work
together on projects published in the peer-reviewed literature, and faculty

The cost of living is low compared to that of major U.S. cities and
