The College
Paul Smith's College is a small, private institution located on a 170-acre campus adjacent to Lower St. Regis Lake in the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park of northern New York State. In addition, the college owns 14,400 acres of adjacent lands composed of forest and lakes. The College is committed to providing all students with an outstanding undergraduate and graduate experience through engaged teaching, experiential learning, and personal attention.
Three of the academic departments (Forestry, Environment & Society, and Natural Sciences) prepare students for careers in natural resources. In addition to bachelor's degrees in natural resources, the college also confers a low residency master's degree in Natural Resource Conservation. The three departments comprise 36 full-time faculty and nearly 600 students. Courses provide extensive "hands-on" laboratory and field experience.
Job Description
Paul Smith's College invites applicants for a full-time faculty appointment as Assistant/Associate Professor of Natural Resources. The position starts in fall of 2021 and will primarily support our baccalaureate degrees in Natural Resource Conservation & Management as well as related programs of Environmental Science, Ecological Restoration, Fisheries & Wildlife Science, and Forestry. The successful candidate will teach an introductory course to natural resources, Soils & Hydrology (lecture and labs), and other courses in physical sciences (such as geology) or human dimensions. Teaching may include developing online courses and teaching senior capstone courses. Other expectations include serving as a program coordinator for the Natural Resource Conservation & Management program, collaborating with other natural resource faculty, leading undergraduate research, and engaging in outreach. Research and outreach is facilitated by the fact that the college is the only baccalaureate granting institution within the 6 million acre Adirondack Park and is in immediate proximity to a diversity of ecosystems and land use designations.
Minimum qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have broad training in natural resource conservation or management, a strong interest in teaching at the undergraduate level where faculty provide personal guidance to undergraduate students, the capacity to teach a variety of courses, proven research ability in natural resources, interested in pursuing research applicable to the Adirondack region, and demonstrated record of professional involvement with his/her community. Successful candidates will demonstrate an interest in facilitating career success of students through developmental advising and participation in professional societies. Therefore, candidates for this position must have (1) a Ph.D. in the natural resources or a related field, (2) documentation of effectively providing personalized, experiential learning at the undergraduate level, (3) a record of productive research, and (4) a record of community outreach within his/her field.
Preferred qualifications:
Paul Smith's College particularly seeks candidates who have experience teaching at a small liberal arts college and have successfully delivered introductory and advanced courses in natural resources. Candidates should have the capacity and interest to develop and teach courses that meet the needs of students in a spectrum of programs related to the environment, including forestry, ecological restoration, natural resources management and conservation, environmental science. Background in botany, mycology, wildlife, forestry, and human dimension can be a benefit.
