*Postdoctoral position at Johns Hopkins University in CO2 fluxes, remote
sensing, and inverse modeling*
*Primary faculty*: Dr. Scot Miller
A Postdoctoral position is available in the research group of Dr. Scot
Miller in the Whiting School of Engineering (Dept. of Environmental Health
and Engineering) at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.
*The position is focused on* estimating global CO2 fluxes using
observations from NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 satellite. An
overall goal of the project is to understand how climate anomalies (i.e.,
drought, flooding, etc.) impact CO2 fluxes from the terrestrial biosphere
in different regions of the globe. We also work with numerous process-based
carbon flux modelers to compare our results using OCO-2 against
state-of-the-art process-based CO2 estimates. Note that this project will
involve extensive inverse modeling with the GEOS-Chem model, and the
project is a collaboration with Prof. Deborah Huntzinger at Northern
Arizona University.
The overall focus of Dr. Miller’s group is on understanding sources and
sinks of CO2 and methane from regional to global scales. We use
observations of greenhouse gases collected from airplanes, towers, and
satellites to estimate emissions across individual states to entire
continents. Our recent projects have focused on interannual variability in
global CO2 fluxes, greenhouse gas emissions from China, and methane fluxes
from the Arctic. More information on the group is available at
http://greenhousegaslab.org/.
Applicants should hold a PhD degree and have a background in atmospheric
modeling and/or greenhouse gases. Experiences/skills in the following areas
are desired: inverse modeling, remote sensing, CO2 fluxes, and the
GEOS-Chem model (or similar models).
For those interested, please send a curriculum vitae, cover letter, and the
names/contact information for three references to Dr. Scot Miller (
smill191 at jhu.edu). Note that the Johns Hopkins School of Engineering pays
all postdoctoral fellows according to the NIH stipend scale. The salary
will be based on this scale and commensurate with years of postgraduate
training.
