Position Focus:

Reporting to the Program Mgr, the PI, the Research Assoc will join a team of researchers, informaticians in bldg, managing, analyzing biodiversity datasets. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining rigorous data standards retains the scientific integrity of new data being uploaded to the Map of Life database. The candidate will generate data products, prepare, upload data, liaise with data partners experts, work with the data mobilization to oversee the digitization of spatial biodiversity information. They will work closely with the other team members to make sure that data products are being delivered in a timely/efficient manner. They will document procedures, communicate progress in an organized logical manner. More specific tasks of this role include:

Managing biodiversity data: assessing incoming datasets, preparing datasets to upload to the database, ensuring rigorous quality control, uploading datasets to the MOL database Preparing metadata, maintaining tracking sheets. Establishing, maintaining contact w data providers, ensure data sharing standards, acquiring new datasets, digitizing existing datasets. Establishing new maintaining existing connections w biodiversity, species experts, actively seeking facilitating expert feedback on species distribution models. Supporting species distribution modeling efforts executing existing modelling workflows. Providing support for researchers, team members with spatial analyses. Develop, maintain documentation for MOL data related processes data, develop update protocols. Using different coding platforms languages (such as R, Python, SQL) to perform analyses, clean manipulate data, prepare data for uploading, upload data to databases. Instructing supporting stud assists post grad assocs with their reg tasks providing technical data support to researchers.

Map of Life aims to support effective global biodiversity education, monitoring, research, decision-making by assembling integrating a wide range of knowledge about species distributions their dynamics over time. Built on a scalable web platform geared for large biodiversity environmental data, MOL provides best-possible species distribution information together with a range of information biodiversity indicator products. MOL leads the data integration mapping efforts of the Half-Earth Proj that aims to identify prioritize target areas for global biodiversity conservation.

Determine best methodology for achieving goals efficiently in a scientifically robust way. Assess the data quality of datasets prepared by techs other data contributors to first eval whether any additional work is required in order to meet data standards. Perform a series of data manipulation tasks using automated approaches utilizing knowledge of ecology, environmental sciences as well as programming knowledge skills. Prepare spatial biodiversity datasets to match complete phylogenies. Perform comprehensive literature review of new taxonomic descriptions to identify changes to species distributions delineating the spatial coverage of new updated species ranges based on published locality information. Oversee the daily activities of the data mobilization team, made up of Yale student research assists. Ensure standards protocols are being updated executed. Analyze summarize data from various projs for use in scientific papers, grnt rptg, web visualizations. Identify data gaps to drive priorities for data mobilization team. Determine the most efficient scientifically rigorous approach for analyzing summarizing data. Provide recommendations to the full team to change protocols advise strategic changes to data collection, processing, visualizations, or provisioning. Ensure maintain the integrity of biodiversity information for scientific analysis mtg data contributor expectations for any data interpretation visualization.

Ensure and maintain the integrity of biodiversity information for scientific analysis and meeting data contributor expectations for any data interpretation and visualization. 9.  Performs additional duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

1.  Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems, specifically QGIS and ArcGIS.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Understanding of field surveys with the ability to interpret data..

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated knowledge of at least one programming language, preferably R, with the ability to acquire new programming languages and techniques.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Well-developed written and oral communication skills and a record of scientific publications and presentations.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Strong critical thinking, problem-solving and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and processes simultaneously.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Experience developing species distribution models.
