Full Job Description
Berkeley Lab's Earth and Environmental Sciences Area (EESA) has an opening for a Computational Geomechanics Postdoctoral Fellow to join their Hydrogeology Department!

In this role, you develop novel 3D numerical models for analyzing coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical (THM) processes in fractured geological media across scales. This role requires expertise in computational geomechanics and its coupling with fluid flow and heat in evolving fractured geological media. We are looking for a strong background in numerical model development for multi-physics problems and an understanding and vision for tackling problems involving complex computational geometry such as moving interfaces, intersecting discrete fractures, and multi-body contacts.

What You Will Do:

  * Develop novel 3D numerical models for fluid flow, heat transfer, mechanics and their couplings in fractured systems.
  * Develop novel 3D models for dynamic fracture initiation and propagation and its interplay with natural fracture system.
  * Use the developed numerical model for analyzing coupled processes in energy geosciences, such as hydrocarbon, geothermal, and geologic disposal of carbon and nuclear waste.
  * Collaborate with scientists in other fields such as experimental rock mechanics, geophysics, geochemistry and applied mathematics.
  * Write peer-review journal articles and technical reports.

What is Required:

  * A recent PhD in Rock Mechanics, Fracture Mechanics, Petroleum Engineering, Geothermal Engineering, Reservoir Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or a closely related field.
  * Expertise in novel model development for discrete fractured system, demonstration of creativity, and proven accomplishments.
  * Good programming skill is required, with fluency in C/C++, and/or C#, FORTRAN.
  * Ability to work effectively in a team environment with a multidisciplinary group of scientists.
  * Good verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration and for writing peer-reviewed journal publications and technical reports.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

  * This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  * This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  * Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  * This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  * Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
