This is your chance to practice geology in one of the most stunning states

hydrocarbon resources, initiation of research that will better define these
resources, liaise with petroleum operators, and become an expert in Utah

geology and also enjoy a work-life balance that affords ample time for
family and outdoor activities. Enjoy a flexible schedule, generous
benefits, telecommute options, and quick access to Utah's mountains and red
rock country, and work with a group of geologists that are passionate about
promoting Utah's geology.

• Initiate research on Utah's petroleum resources, with possible projects
related to carbon sequestration and produced water management
• Seek external funding for petroleum research
• Liaise with Utah petroleum operators, other state and federal agencies,
and academia
• Conduct petroleum geology research in the laboratory and in the field
(e.g., resource assessments, prospect analysis), publish and present results
• Help manage the Utah Core Research Center and promote the use and
expansion of its collection
• Curate historic geologic data and devise plans to make this information
easily available to researchers
• Develop and lead Utah-based field trips and workshops for industry,
academia, and the general public
• Answer inquiries from industry, government, and the general public about
Utah's petroleum resources
• Become a leader of the Petroleum Section within UGS

The ideal candidate:
• B.S. degree in Geology (or closely related field), advanced degree
preferred
• 5-10 years experience in the petroleum industry or equivalent
petroleum-related research experience (position could be underfilled at
Project Geologist if candidate has less experience)
• First-hand knowledge of the petroleum resources in Utah
• The ability to seek external funding, perform independent research, and
write professional papers
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to give professional
presentations, lead field trips, and teach workshops
• Comfortable in a leadership/management role
• Self-starter and independent researcher, but still enjoys working as part
of the team
• Possesses the computer skills necessary for a geology-based research
position (MS office, Adobe, ArcGIS, Petra or equivalent software, etc.)
• Experienced with field and core-based research projects (geologic mapping
skills, ability to measure stratigraphic sections, core description skills,
knowledge of petrophysics, etc.)
• Skills and knowledge that adds to and compliments current UGS expertise
(e.g., structural geology, machine learning, basin analysis, petrophysics,
geochemistry, etc.)
