Dear all,

Two new postdoc positions just opened in my group at UC Berkeley/LBNL.
Please see details below and distribute widely.
For more information see: https://www.keenangroup.info/join_us.html

*1.*
*Postdoctoral Scholar *– *SMAP Science Team project*

*Department of Environmental Science, Policy & Management *
(apply here: https://tinyurl.com/y6nfzbeh)

We're looking for a creative and self-motivated postdoc to join the Keenan
Group at UC Berkeley (http://www.keenangroup.info/). The postdoc will work
on a NASA-funded SMAP project, which is focused on quantifying the role of
water in regulating global ecosystem state and function. A key focus of
this project will be examining ecological responses to changes in both soil
moisture amount and state, using retrievals from NASAs Soil Moisture Active
Passive (SMAP) mission. The postdoc will also work in collaboration with
Prof. Manuela Girotto, UC Berkeley.

NASA’s SMAP mission represents a unique opportunity to link the terrestrial
carbon, water and energy cycles to identify vulnerable populations,
hotspots and critical thresholds of vegetation-water relations. The project
will use remote sensing retrievals from SMAP and GRACE, eddy-covariance
observations and land surface models. The ideal candidate will have
experience in one or more of those areas and should have strong
quantitative skills.

Specific duties of the position include:
• The application of quantitative analytical methods to large datasets
• Critical appraisal of ecological and physiological theory
• Model development and implementation
• Presentation of results at scientific meetings
• Publishing of results in scientific journals
• Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students

Required qualifications:
• PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD degree
program (or equivalent international degree) at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications:
• Proficient coding skills in at least one of: R, Matlab, Python, Fortran
• Knowledge of ecophysiology and plant biochemistry
• Both numerical and communication skills
• Evidence of ability to publish results in relevant journals
• Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team

The review of applicants will begin on November 20th, and continue until
the position is filled. Please submit your application by November 20th in
order to be given full consideration.

*2. **Postdoctoral Scholar *– *DOE Extremes & Streamflow projects*

*Department of Environmental Science, Policy & Management *
(apply here: https://tinyurl.com/y5papfyn)
There is an opening for a creative and self-motivated postdoctoral scholar
position in the group of Prof. Keenan (http://www.keenangroup.info/) at UC
Berkeley. This individual will participate in the DOE-funded HELIOS
project, aimed at advancing efforts to understand the impact of extreme
events such as heat, drought and wildfire on both coastal ecosystems and
water resources. The work will be focused on the relationship between
ecosystem responses to extremes, ecosystem water use, and streamflow.

The project will use land surface models, remote sensing, machine learning,
streamflow and eddy-covariance observations. The ideal candidate would have
either familiarity with large scale models (e.g., CESM, E3SM), streamflow
models and observations, eddy-covariance measurements and/or machine
learning based emulators. Candidates with strong quantitative skills and an
interest in developing skills in any of the above areas are also encouraged
to apply.

Specific duties of the position include:
• The application of quantitative analytical methods to large datasets
• Critical appraisal of ecological and physiological theory
• Model development and implementation
• Presentation of results at scientific meetings
• Publishing of results in scientific journals
• Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students

Required qualifications:
• PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD degree
program (or equivalent international degree) at the time of application.

• Both numerical and communication skills
• Evidence of ability to publish results in relevant journals
• Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team

The review of applicants will begin on November 20th, and continue until
the position is filled. Please submit your application by November 20th in
order to be given full consideration.

Thanks, and apologies for cross posting,

Trevor
