Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a hardworking and driven Post-Doctoral Appointee to join our dynamic team to develop and use computational tools to tackle complex multi-physics problems primarily in the area of optical atmospheric propagation. The successful applicant will have a theoretical understanding of radiative transfer and proficient programming skills, as well as some knowledge of verification and validation techniques, best code development practices, and using High Performance Computing systems.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
* Develop models to improve the fidelity of calculating the interaction of light with atmospheric particles and clouds
* Embed, verify, and validate the models in Sandia-developed software
* Solve remote-sensing problems using the models and software to analyze the propagation of optical signals from the Earth to satellites
* Work with a mentor one-on-one or in small teams
* Document results in high-quality presentations and reports
* Explore growth areas in cloud dynamics and the physics of lightning formation

Some travel is required for this position.

Qualifications We Require
* PhD acquired within the last 5 years', in physics, physical sciences, engineering, applied mathematics, or a related field
* Experience in computational modeling and simulation of optical atmospheric propagation or radiation transport
*         Programming experience in C++
* Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q level clearance

Qualifications We Desire
* High level of academic success in undergraduate and graduate programs
* Knowledge in hydrodynamics, material behavior and interactions in extreme environments, cloud dynamics, or the physics of lightning formation
* Experience with parallel programming in computing environments
*         Proficiency with Linux scripting
* Experience with software build and test tools (e.g. CMake/CTest)
* Experience with visualization software (i.e. Paraview)
* Programming or scripting experience with Python or Matlab or willingness and ability to learn
* Experience with V&V techniques and uncertainty quantification methodology
* Proven ability to perform independent research, as well as to work effectively in a team in various roles (leader and group member)
* Proficiency with varied communication methods, including oral presentation, preparation of high-impact visual presentations, written reports, and the ability to clearly and concisely communicate scientific and technical information at a level tailored the audience

About Our Team

We serve national defense and nonproliferation customers with theoretical and computational research of nuclear detonation effects and signatures. We develop first-principles models to underpin a deep physics-based understanding of the development of nuclear fireballs and their optical signatures in a variety of circumstances. Department expertise includes radiation transport, hydrodynamics, material behavior and interactions in extreme environments, and code development for high performance computing.

Position Information

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
