Position: Biological Scientist II in the Environmental Pedology and Sustainable Nutrient Management Systems Labs at the University of Florida - Gainesville

Job No. 514921

Work type: Staff Full-Time

Description: This position works in a team-based interdisciplinary setting to conduct environmental research including the establishment of experimental trials, the collection of samples (soil, water, and vegetation), the characterization of samples, and the summary/analysis of data.  This position is also responsible for managing day-to-day research operations including addressing field and laboratory safety, procuring and maintaining equipment, and training/oversight of laboratory users.

Specific job duties
1.     Laboratory Management
• Develop, modify, and implement training programs that allow students and collaborators to utilize laboratory equipment and space safely and in compliance with UF policies and regulations.
• Manage and coordinate access to laboratory equipment and space to promote timely completion of research projects.
• Monitor the condition of scientific equipment (laboratory and field) and develop/implement maintenance protocols that ensure accuracy and quality of experimental data.
• Manage invoices (incoming and outgoing) related to supply purchases, vendors of scientific equipment, and contract-based laboratory analyses.
• Communicate with and oversee laboratory users to maintain clean and orderly laboratory conditions.


2.     Laboratory Duties
• Evaluate and perform wet and dry procedures to prepare environmental samples for chemical, physical, and/or biological characterization.
• Quantify analyte concentrations using standard reference curves and appropriate quality control protocols.
• Assist in the optimization and testing of existing methods and procedures as needed to meet specific project goals.


3.     Research Activities
• Assist in the experimental design of field, greenhouse, and laboratory trials.
• Develop, modify, and implement efficient means to catalogue experimental data, experimental metadata, and environmental samples.
• Conduct statistical and graphical summary of data.
• Assist and contribute to the preparation of scientific presentations, scientific publications, technical reports, and progress reports for research sponsors.


4.     Field Work
• Coordinate with supervisors and students to travel to and from research sites located throughout the southeastern US, in potentially harsh conditions (i.e., hot and humid climate).
• Assist in the evaluation, modification, and implementation of standard methods to collect soil, water, and plant samples.

Advertised salary: $41,000.00 annually; commensurate with experience

Minimum requirements: Doctoral degree in biology, soil science or a closely related field; or a master's degree in biology, soil science or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in biology, soil science or a closely related field and three years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Preferred qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants that:
• Have experience with any of the following analytical techniques: total C and N by dry combustion, particle size by laser diffraction, elemental concentrations by UV/vis spectrophotometers (including microplate readers), elemental concentrations by x-ray fluorescence, soil enzyme analyses, soil incubations;
• Have trained and worked alongside students in field and laboratory settings;
• Have successfully grown plants for research purposes in field and/or greenhouse conditions;
• Have digitally compiled, managed and analyzed (with basic statistical tests) large data sets;
• Are willing and able to work outside for long periods of time in humid, hot, and wet environments.
