The Town of Brookline, a culturally diverse community of 60,000 surrounded on three sides by Boston, is seeking an Assistant Director for Sustainability Planning to lead the planning for and implementation of municipal sustainability initiatives and programs in support of the Town's commitment to sustainable practices. The Assistant Director will be responsible for the new Sustainability Planning Division of the Planning department and will perform complex professional work related to the development, implementation, promotion and monitoring of Town initiatives pertaining to sustainability including environmental, energy, climate-change, and similar programs and issues, as well as related federal, state and local programs. Performs all other related work as required.
Qualifications:
Master's degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies Energy or Environmental Policy or related field and five years of experience in sustainability, including the management of energy-related programs. Bachelor's Degree in the aforementioned fields and seven years of relevant experience will be considered, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Thorough working knowledge of climate change science, social behavior change, and organizational change strategies. Knowledge of municipal and private sector sustainability standards such as Passive House, Net Zero, Institute for Living Future, 2030 Districts, LEED, etc. Familiarity with Mass Energy Insight and Energy Star programs a plus. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Proven ability to independently research and analyze complex issues and create, implement, and maintain relevant environmental management programs and recommendations; to establish cooperative working relationships with Town staff and a variety of government agencies; to negotiate on behalf of the Town contracts and partnership agreements with regards to energy procurement, renewable energy generation construction projects, sustainability consultant work, etc.
Demonstrated skills in grant writing and program management, greenhouse gas accounting and management; developing public education/ communication programs related to sustainability; leading the negotiation of complex public-private agreements. Must have excellent and persuasive verbal and written communication skills and ability to conduct public meetings and influence the behavior of others.
A valid driver's license and ability to attend evening meetings are required.
