Dear ES_JOBS_NET

Climate Science Graduate Student Opportunities

The Climate Science program in the Department of Plants, Soils, and Climate at Utah State University (http://www.usu.edu/degrees/index.cfm?id=56) seeks motivated students (MS or Ph.D.) to study climate prediction. The recruited student will be expected to participate in a project on multi-year forecasts of the Colorado River water supply (see the publication on this nature journal article: https://doi.org/10.1038/s43247-020-00027-0). The project will include the dynamical predictions using a state-of-the-art Earth system model, statistical analyses for observed and model-simulated climate datasets, and development of the webpage-based platform to distribute the research outcomes. The project involves collaboration with Dr. Simon Wang and Dr. Yoshi Chikamoto at Utah State University. Students who have a strong passion and interest in climate prediction should contact Dr. Yoshi Chikamoto (yoshi.chikamoto at usu.edu<mailto:yoshi.chikamoto at usu.edu>). Initial evaluation will start immediately, and the position will remain open until filled.

More information about this research project can be found in USU today (http://www.usu.edu/today/story/the-colorado-rivers-water-supply-is-predictable-owing-to-long-term-ocean-memory) and a blog post (https://sustainabilitycommunity.springernature.com/posts/predicting-prolonged-drought-in-the-colorado-river-basin).

Location:
Utah State University’s main campus is located in the city of Logan in northern Utah's Cache Valley, 80 miles north of Salt Lake City. The surrounding area includes ski resorts, lakes, rivers, and mountains, which makes Cache Valley one of the finest recreational environments in the United States. For a region with a population of about 114,000, the community and the university offer a spectacular array of first-rate cultural offerings provided by visiting artists and touring companies, faculty, students, and members of the local community. In addition, Cache Valley is a very safe location as Logan ranked #1 Safest Metro in the West by Law Street, May 2015. USU is an integral part of local economies and communities in Utah, and its contributions are appreciated by local residents, resulting in a unique living-learning community.
