Professor Ryan Torn at the University at Albany is seeking a post-doctoral researcher with interests in hurricane modeling and prediction. The research is part of the NOAA Hurricane Forecast Improvement Project (HFIP) and involves calculating the statistics of the difference between observations and model forecasts (innovations) and the difference between analyses and background forecasts (increments) over many cases. This work will be used to identify model biases within the Hurricane Analysis and Forecasting System (HAFS), which is being developed as part of the NOAA Unified Forecasting System. This research will involve coordination and collaboration with the HAFS data assimilation development team.

Candidates should hold a PhD in atmospheric science or related discipline, conferred within the last three years, from a college or university accredited by the U.S Dept. of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization, have some experience using numerical weather prediction model output, and have the ability to work independently. Ideal candidates would have some experience with model validation; however, data assimilation experience is not required. Applicants from underrepresented background are especially encouraged to apply.

Terms of appointment are for one (1) year, renewable for one additional year, subject to satisfactory performance.

Applicants are asked to submit electronically: (1) a curriculum vitae (including a publication list), (2) the names of three individuals who can provide a letter of reference and (3) a statement of professional interests to Ryan Torn (rtorn at albany.edu<mailto:rtorn at albany.edu>). The position will remain open until it is filled. Preference will be given to applications that are received before 15 November 2020.

Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Ryan Torn (rtorn at albany.edu<mailto:rtorn at albany.edu>) to discuss the position.
