Position Summary

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, New York, is seeking a
full-time Research Staff Assistant (RSA) to support the Geoinformatics
Research Group within the Marine Geology and Geophysics department. Under
close supervision of the PI, the RSA will assist with curating user
contributed content of the geochemical data repositories and the System for
Earth Sample Registration operated by the Geoinformatics Research Group,
including quality assurance and quality control of data and metadata,
DOI/IGSN assignment, maintenance of data templates; support users with data
submission and data access; help identify enhancements to existing services
and new tools and services to meet community needs; ensure necessary
updates to documentation of data curation workflows. Participates in
conducting usability tests. Contributes to outreach activities.

Responsibilities

   - Process sample registration in the System for Earth Sample
   Registration SESAR, including quality assessment and control of sample
   metadata, user support via RT system and user training; maintain and
   improve Help materials for SESAR users; assist with usability tests.
   - Process data submissions to the EarthChem Library: review and approve
   submitted datasets, perform QC of metadata records, ensure proper
   registration of datasets with DOI; provide user support via RT and user
   training, maintain and improve Help materials; assist with usability tests.
   - Support virtual community engagement and outreach events for EarthChem
   and SESAR, including usability tests.
   - Participate in generating user tutorials and other help resources.
   - Reports to and receives close supervision and guidance from the
   Doherty Senior Research Scientist and interacts directly with data curators.
   - Exercises independent judgement and initiative within specific
   parameters set by the supervisor.


Minimum Qualifications

BS in Earth & Environmental Sciences and 2 years of laboratory work in
analytical geochemistry and/or working with geological samples.

Preferred Qualifications

Technical experience with scientific databases, metadata standards and/or
database development is strongly preferred.
