The Yu Biogeochemistry Lab in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is hiring 1-2 graduate students at the PhD or MS level to begin Summer or Fall of 2021. The position will be fully funded (4 yrs for PhD and 2 yrs for MS) through a combination of research and teaching assistantships. We are specifically looking for applicants interested in hydrology, biogeochemistry, and/or ecology in the context of agroecosystem dynamics and sustainability. Research in the Yu Lab is focused on understanding the sources, transport, and transformations of reactive nitrogen in agricultural watersheds. We use stable isotope tracers, high-frequency field sampling, and model data analyses to study the effects of agricultural land use and management practices on watershed nitrogen cycling and water quality, with a particular emphasis on the interactions with climate change. Prior research experience with hydrological and/or biogeochemical modeling is preferred but not required.
