Dear Colleagues,

SONG BIO-ESM Lab at the University of Arizona is offering one/two PhD research assistant oppositions this Fall 2021. The applicants will join in the Departments of hydrology and atmospheric Sciences and the U of A’s new National Science Foundation-funded “Ecosystem Genomics" graduate training program (BRIDGES).
Who we are?
The SONG BIO-ESM Lab specializes in Biospheric-Earth System Modeling. We aim to advance our understanding and predictive power of the role of vegetation, microbial communities, and humans -the biotic components of the Earth system - in terrestrial-atmospheric interactions. To achieve this goal, we develop and employ a variety of state-of-the-art tools to address pressing issues of the world. In particular, we develop multi-scale datasets, scaling solutions, and process-based models across disciplinary boundaries to improve Earth System Models (ESMs). We apply improved ESMs to simulate and forecast biospheric system behaviors in response to climate forcings, and seek both scientific insights and practical strategies of fundamental relevance to societal well-being, including agriculture production, bioenergy feedstock, carbon sequestration, and water quantity and quality.
Current research in our lab mainly focus on three fields:
- Linking ecosystem genomics to Earth system modeling for improving microbial functional representation in the ESMs.
- Linking advances in plant physiology and crop engineering to Earth system modeling for improving parameterization of plants and manipulated crop varieties in ESMs.
- Developing model assessment tools to identify climate-smart agriculture practices.
Please see our lab website for more details: https://song-bio-esm.lab.arizona.edu/

What’s the BRIDGES Program?
BRIDGES program aims to cultivate the next generation scientists with integrated fundamental biological knowledge, data science, and computation skills to solve real-world problems like climate change, environmental sustainability, or maintaining our global food supply.

BRIDGES is an NSF-funded interdisciplinary graduate training program in ecosystem genomics that trains diverse students to communicate (1) across the entire “genes-to-ecosystems” scale, and (2) among the different cultures of science and the people that practice science, to solve real world problems that matter.

All who are applying to one of UA’s seven graduate programs (EEB, SPLS, ENVS, BES, HAS, SNRE, EIS)<http://bridges.arizona.edu/#services> for matriculation in fall 2021 are encouraged to apply to join NSF BRIDGES’ first training cohort! U.S. Citizens and permanent residents are also eligible to apply to competitive NRT fellowships of $34,000 per year for up to two years. Those not eligible for fellowships are nonetheless encouraged to apply to our program, to avail themselves of the program’s benefits including interdisciplinary training, travel funding, and opportunities in professional development, and outreach. BRIDGES (and accepting home departments) will work with accepted International students to identify possible paths of funding support.

For more details, please see the BRIDGES website (http://bridges.arizona.edu/how-to-apply) and the attached fellowships introduction.

Start Date:
Interested applicants could apply our HAS Fall 2021 Program and/or BRIDGES Program. The HAS department provides diverse Ph.D. programs, including the Ph.D. program in Atmospheric Science (https://has.arizona.edu/doctor-philosophy-atmospheric-sciences) and the Ph.D. program in Hydrometeorology (https://has.arizona.edu/doctor-philosophy-hydrometeorology). If you are interested in BRIDGES program, please apply for HAS program and the BRIDGES program simultaneously by Dec 1. Please visit the corresponding website for more information.

Qualifications:
Preferred qualification would be a BS or MS in atmospheric sciences, global ecology, earth system science, environmental data science, climate science, or other related majors. International applicants are welcome.

How to Apply:
Please directly apply for any program described above by the deadline. For the BRIDGES program applicant, please make sure you apply for the HAS program and the BRIDGES program (http://bridges.arizona.edu/how-to-apply) simultaneously by Dec 1. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Song (chopinsong at arizona.edu<mailto:chopinsong at arizona.edu>) with your CV and a letter of research interest. The position will be closed until the satisfied applicants are found.
