Job Description
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to conduct innovative research in modeling river sediment and biogeochemistry fluxes using the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model<https://e3sm.org/> (E3SM).
The candidates will work with a team of scientists across multiple national laboratories to test and improve the capabilities of E3SM in modeling river hydrology as well as sediment and biogeochemistry (carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus) fluxes. The candidate will work on evaluating the models against observations of discharge, sediment, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus as well as conducting numerical experiments to address important science questions related to human-land-river-ocean interactions, such as the evolution of coastal hypoxia under climate and land use change, in focused regions and across the globe. This position offers exciting opportunities to collaborate on a number of DOE funded research projects at PNNL that focus on developing coastal modeling capabilities in earth system models such as the Integrated Coastal Modeling (ICoM) project.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
The position is for two years and renewable contingent upon performance. The successful candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in earth sciences, civil and environmental engineering, or related fields. Experiences in numerical model developing in hydrology, biogeochemistry, or geomorphology and ability to analyze model outputs and observations using modern computational and statistical tools will be considered as key qualifications during the evaluation.
