Fisheries Research Scientist – Genetics/Genomics



Position Overview:

Advances in next-generation sequencing and genome-wide analysis are enabling new applications in fisheries and aquaculture. Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) is offering a unique opportunity to shape the future of the institution by contributing to ongoing projects and developing new research initiatives related to commercially important marine vertebrates and invertebrates. Our focus is to use genomic approaches to investigate population structure, animal health, biodiversity, the genetic basis of phenotypic traits and adaptation to different marine environments. This position is an extraordinary opportunity for an ambitious entrepreneurial scientist who is interested in helping create a world-class research institute.



Major Responsibilities:

• Perform next-generation sequencing of commercially important marine organisms

• Analyze genetic variation by whole genome sequencing and genotyping SNP markers to assess spatial and temporal population substructure

• Develop molecular tools to detect and study aquatic animal diseases

• Identify and implement emerging technologies including high throughput barcoding, eDNA and close-kin mark-recapture (CKMR)

• Contribute to planning and execution of collaborative projects

• Take a primary role in grant writing and assist in fund-raising efforts

• Lead and contribute to journal articles and technical reports

• Give presentations to stakeholders and scientific audiences

• Represent GMGI at fishery industry and technology events and meetings



Skills and Qualifications:

• PhD with experience in fisheries science, marine biology, population genetics and genomics

• Experience generating and analyzing genomic and transcriptomic sequencing data and high-volume SNP data for fisheries or aquaculture applications

• Experience with molecular techniques including quantitative PCR and rt-qPCR, especially applied to aquatic animal disease diagnostics

• Strong mathematical, statistical, and computational skills





• Familiarity with the Linux environment and basic knowledge in command line software, shell scripting and applying scripts of commonly used languages for biological data analysis (e.g. Perl, Python, and/or R)

• Experience with commercial finfish and shellfish and priority aquaculture species

• Strong relationships and history within the fishery and aquaculture communities

• Self-starting, independent, creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills

• History of success as a driving force in research projects and programs

• Demonstrated record of leadership, integrity and flexibility

• Excellent communication and teamwork skills



The Fisheries Research Scientist will report to the Science Director.
