Job description: The School of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma (OU) is seeking a postdoctoral research scientist to examine tropical convective processes and their interactions with synoptic equatorial waves (e.g., African Easterly Waves and convectively-coupled Kelvin waves) over the West African coastal region. This project will utilize satellite, in-situ, and aircraft observations, reanalysis data, and cloud-resolving modeling to understand processes that contribute to the characteristics of tropical convective systems as they move offshore from the West African coastal region. The successful candidate will work with the research groups led by Dr. Naoko Sakaeda and Dr. Elinor Martin at OU and in collaboration with Dr. Rosimar Rios-Berrios at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The candidate will also be mentored not only on the scientific tasks to be completed, but also on professional development topics including career planning, oral and written communication, teaching, and networking.

Starting date: June 2020 or earlier is desired. Applicants who can start by June 2020 will likely have an opportunity to participate in the NASA CPEX-AW field campaign that will be based on Cape Verde in July and August 2020.

Appointment: Two years, renewable for an additional third year.

Qualifications:

1)    The candidate must already have a Ph. D. degree or be ABD with an expected graduation date by the end of 2020 in atmospheric sciences or related fields.

2)    Experience with data analysis and visualization using programming languages.

3)    Ability to work independently and as a team in a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment

4)    Excellent oral and written communication skills

5)    Experience with numerical modeling and working with satellite and aircraft data is ideal but not necessary

Location: Norman, Oklahoma. The School of Meteorology resides in the National Weather Center (NWC), located on the Norman campus of the University of Oklahoma. In addition to the School of Meteorology, the NWC houses state and federal organizations on weather and climate related research and operational programs. The successful candidate will also visit NCAR in Boulder, Colorado to work with Dr. Rosimar Rios-Berrios for up to three months.
