*Position Title:*
Golden Undergraduate Coordinator and Instructor (id:61499)
*Campus:*
Orono
*Department:*
School of Earth and Climate Sciences - OERS
*Bargaining Unit:*
AFUM
*Salary Band/Wage Band:*
N/A
*Location:*
Orono, ME

*Statement of the Job:*
The School of Earth and Climate Sciences (SECS) at the University of Maine
seeks applications for the Golden Undergraduate Coordinator and Instructor
(GUCI), a permanent non-tenure track, nine month academic year faculty
member. The primary duties of this position are undergraduate education and
administration of undergraduate-related academic matters. Research and
scholarly activity in an area of Earth and Climate Sciences or Earth
science education is encouraged as a subsidiary activity, and the
successful candidate will be expected to stay current in their
academic discipline area. We are seeking a vibrant, enthusiastic candidate
with strong organizational skills who is committed to fostering an
inclusive environment for undergraduate education. As the first point of
contact for our undergraduate students, the GUCI is an integral part of the
SECS faculty, and we are seeking a candidate who will grow with our
changing undergraduate population and help shape the future of our program
for many years to come.

Initial teaching duties will include one large, introductory Earth Science
course per semester with TA-supported laboratories for majors in Earth and
Climate Sciences and Ecology and Environmental Sciences, as well as for
non-majors. Additionally, the successful candidate will teach a
College-required “Issues and Opportunities” course every fall to incoming
students, which is used to help students select a concentration and succeed
in a university setting. The class includes an overnight field trip early
in the Fall. The successful candidate will lead several local weekend field
trips every year, as well as assist with annual or biannual trips lasting
1-3 weeks.

Initial program coordination duties include serving as: 1) Undergraduate
Program Coordinator, an administrative role that interfaces with College
and School on issues including academic requirements, advising, and student
outreach/retention; 2) Recruiting Coordinator, which involves attending
regular University Open Houses, Accepted Student Days, and New Student
Orientation, as well as interacting with interested students throughout the
year; 3) advisor for all first-year and transfer students, which includes
developing a plan of study for their degree, as well as addressing ongoing
issues such as financial need, academic probation, and student personal
issues; 4) Chair of the Student Scholarship and Development Funds
Committee; and 5) the SECS point of contact on all issues regarding course
and classroom scheduling.

This position carries with it a 100% teaching load, or the equivalent of 18
credits per year. This 18-credit workload will consist of teaching the
courses described above and performing the aforementioned program
coordinator duties; thus, the load does not consist of 18 contact hours of
teaching but rather is split between teaching and program coordination
duties. Adjustments to the expected teaching may be made based on the
applicant's interest and the School's needs. This is a named position that
comes with an annual stipend in addition to the base salary. The current
GUCI is entering a 2-year phased retirement, so the successful applicant
will transition into the position with guidance from the current GUCI.
