Your research will span topics in model-observation comparison, including the construction of model evaluation datasets, statistical evaluation of observational uncertainty, the design and execution of global model simulations and the analysis of single and multi-model ensembles to quantify and constrain uncertainty in predictions of Earth system behavior. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division, Physical and Life Sciences Directorate.
Essential Duties
- Conduct detailed complex quantitative comparisons of climate model results with satellite observations.
- Design and run model simulations for hypothesis-based scientific investigations of the causes of climate and Earth system variability and change.
- Publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present technical results at scientific conferences.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Travel as required.
- Participate in the development of research proposals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- PhD in meteorology, atmospheric science, oceanography or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience working with satellite-based atmospheric sounding measurements.
- Significant experience in the comparison of weather or climate model results with satellite observations.
- Ability to effectively perform independent research.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced by published results and presentations.
- Experience collaborating effectively with a team of scientists of diverse backgrounds.
- Proficiency in software development using Python.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience designing and performing simulations using atmospheric general circulation or coupled Earth system models.
