Job Description

The Desert Research Institute (DRI) Division of Atmospheric Sciences is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow or an Assistant Research Professor to advance a research program on air quality topics such as PM2.5, ozone, deposition, and visibility. We are looking for an expert in emissions modeling, dispersion modeling, chemical transport modeling, data visualization, and advanced data analysis techniques. This position is located in DRI's Northern Nevada Science Center in Reno, NV. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in simulation of atmospheric systems (hypothesis setting and testing using simulations; analysis and exposition of simulation results; application of Eulerian air quality models), manipulating large datasets (e.g., observations collected using aerometric instruments, emissions data, and model output data), and conducting experiments with numerical models that are guided by empirical data. The research activities associated with this position will also build the knowledge base related to air quality management strategies, an important component of research in the Division.

DRI's faculty members bring a unique blend of academic rigor and private-sector pragmatism that has earned DRI a reputation for delivering rapid, high-quality environmental science in a businesslike fashion. The successful candidate will be encouraged to collaborate broadly with DRI's faculty and external colleagues. They are encouraged to collaborate with DRI's research laboratories across its Divisions (i.e., Hydrologic Sciences and Earth and Ecosystems Sciences), and with the Atmospheric Sciences Division labs including the Environmental Analysis Facility, Organic Analytical Laboratory, and Western Regional Climate Center, among others. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to join the graduate faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) Interdisciplinary Program in Atmospheric Sciences, which offers graduate degrees in atmospheric sciences. The program is jointly administered by UNR and DRI, offering DAS faculty the opportunity to teach courses and advise graduate students.

Required Qualifications
* Ph.D. in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, atmospheric science, chemistry, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
* 2-year minimum experience in atmospheric or closely related science research (candidates with less or no experience will be considered for a postdoctoral fellowship with potential for growth and promotional opportunity).
* Demonstrated expertise in using regional air quality models such as CMAQ, CAMx, including ability to use emissions processing software as well as post-processing of model results.
* Demonstrated ability to conduct sensitivity simulations using brute-force methods or using various sensitivity tools available with the regional air quality model.
* Demonstrated ability to publish in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Proficient in presenting research results at professional meetings.

Preferred Qualifications
* Potential for ability to initiate, plan, obtain funding, and carry out research projects.
* Exhibited ability to work collaboratively with others in an interdisciplinary environment.
* Established experience contributing to program development through networking and collaborative proposal writing.
* Demonstrated ability to use receptor models.
* Skilled in using one or more programming languages, such as Fortran, C++, Python, R, etc.
* Experience working with Linux operating system.
* Understanding of air quality measurements and their limitations.

Conditions of Employment
* Must be willing to travel via car or plane for client visits and or presenting at scientific conferences/meetings.
