Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) Modeler
Spire Global is a space-to-cloud analytics company that owns and operates the world's largest multi-purpose constellation of satellites. Its proprietary data and algorithms provide the most advanced maritime, aviation, and weather tracking in the world. In addition to its constellation, Spire's data infrastructure includes a global ground station network and 24/7 operations that provide real-time global coverage of every point on Earth.
We are seeking a Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) modeler to facilitate the implementation and validation of its weather forecast systems including maximizing the value and use of Spire's Radio Occultation (GNSS-RO) data. The person in this position will be a key contributor toward the implementation and improvement of Spire modeling systems and data testing. Spire Global is seeking to lead integration and testing of next-generation physical parameterization packages, develop improvements in model dynamics, and work with the data associated with modern NWP.
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated scientist to work with a team of NWP modelers, data assimilation experts, software engineers, and computer scientists within Spire as well as scientists from around the world to assimilate unprecedented large amounts of GNSS-RO satellite data, all with the end-goal of making weather forecasts better for the global community. The successful candidate will join the NWP modeling team at Spire's office in Boulder, Colorado, USA.
Main responsibilities:
* The successful candidate will work with Spire NWP modeling and research team to implement and maintain state-of-art capabilities in Spire's weather forecasting system
* Make modifications and improvements to community models
* Collaborate in the development, testing, and implementation of advanced physics improvements within global weather prediction models.
* Develop and implement interface software that connects data assimilation output to model input as well as interface software that connects model output to applications
Basic Qualifications:
* Masters or Ph.D. degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or equivalent working experience in NWP model physics and dynamics.
*         7-10 years of experience using Fortran-90
* Knowledge of high-level programming languages such as Python
Desired Qualifications:
* Experience developing, evaluating, and implementing code changes to physical packages
* Knowledge of community models such as WRF, MPAS, FV3 and GFS is a plus
* Experience developing and maintaining interface software linked to model inputs and outputs
* Comfortable and experienced compiling model output and data, performing analyses, and presenting findings to management
* Requires ability and willingness to collaborate amongst cross-functional engineering, scientific, and product development teams
* Experience in the use of NCAR Command Language (NCL) scripting and graphical display packages (such as GrADS) is desirable
