The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) is seeking a Research Scientist to work on laser-based instrumentation for measurement of atmospheric constituents. This position will work primarily on developing fiber laser-based instrumentation for the measurement of atmospheric trace gases. Our Research Scientist is expected to work independently and with scientists and engineers in the Atmospheric Composition and Chemical Processes group at CSD, and with collaborators at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to improve upon existing ultraviolet single-frequency fiber-based laser systems for deployment on mobile platforms including research aircraft. An initial focus of this work is the measurement of concentrations and isotopic composition of sulfur dioxide and nitric oxide throughout the troposphere and lower stratosphere.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  *   Participation in the design, construction, and improvement of fiber laser systems and atmospheric analytical instrumentation.
  *   Participation in field missions to make atmospheric measurements. Field missions require often require multiple consecutive weeks of travel at deployment sites.
  *   Preparation of data and its interpretation for presentation at scientific meetings and for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

  *   The position is available for a period of two years with the possibility of extension.
  *   This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder, but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305. If you are hired for this role you will be required to pass a background clearance for site access.

  *   PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Atmospheric Science or related field.
What You Will Need

  *   Interest in building and using custom instrumentation to make measurements in the atmosphere.
  *   Knowledge of UV/visible molecular absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy.
What We Would Like You To Have

  *   Knowledge of Laser Physics and experience in the design and construction of fiber lasers and amplifiers.
  *   Knowledge and experience with nonlinear Optics and nonlinear optical frequency conversion.
  *   Experience in the design of geometric optical systems and stray-light reduction.
  *   A record of presentation of scientific results at conferences and publication in scientific journals.
  *   A background in atmospheric science is desirable but not required.
