The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) is seeking a Research Scientist to work on laser-based instrumentation for measurement of atmospheric constituents. This position will work primarily on developing fiber laser-based instrumentation for the measurement of atmospheric trace gases. Our Research Scientist is expected to work independently and with scientists and engineers in the Atmospheric Composition and Chemical Processes group at CSD, and with collaborators at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to improve upon existing ultraviolet single-frequency fiber-based laser systems for deployment on mobile platforms including research aircraft. An initial focus of this work is the measurement of concentrations and isotopic composition of sulfur dioxide and nitric oxide throughout the troposphere and lower stratosphere.
Who We Are
Who We Are
At CIRES, the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, more than 800 environmental scientists work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people's relationship with the planet. CIRES is a partnership of NOAA and the University of Colorado Boulder, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at the Earth's poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, and solid Earth sciences. Our vision is to be instrumental in ensuring a sustainable future environment by advancing scientific and societal understanding of the Earth system.

In the Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) of the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory, researchers develop and use instruments to make precise atmospheric measurements, conduct laboratory experiments, design and execute field missions, analyze observations, and use sophisticated computer models to understand better how our changing atmosphere is influencing climate - and therefore people.
