Dear Colleagues,
PNNL is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate to improve the land-atmosphere coupling of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM; see http://e3sm.org for more information) by accounting for heterogeneous exchanges between the land and atmosphere. The complexity of spatial patterns over land across a range of scales plays a key role in convection, mesoscale circulations, hydrologic extremes, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience. Significant advances in the representation of subgrid land heterogeneity have been made over the last few decades, but most Earth system models do not represent the communication of land heterogeneous states to the atmospheric boundary layer. The successful candidate will work on a highly collaborative climate process team (CPT) project. The candidate will be responsible for implementing a new parameterization to couple the subgrid tiling scheme of the E3SM Land Model (ELM) with the subgrid parameterization of the E3SM Atmosphere Model (EAM). Working with scientists at PNNL and within the CPT project, the candidate will design numerical experiments, develop diagnostics and metrics for model skills, evaluate and constrain the model using large eddy simulations (LES) and observations, and characterize the implications of the new parameterization for surface climate, variability, and extremes.

Thanks!
