The Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Lab is seeking a post-doctoral researcher with expertise in terrestrial biogeochemical modeling and in using Earth System Models (ESMs) and/or vegetation demographic models.

Major Job Duties/Responsibilities:

You will help synthesize and analyze observational and experimental data and help design, execute and analyze model simulations to understand tropical ecosystem responses to changing environments. The researcher will develop model testbeds to evaluate the performance of ELM-FATES at several key tropical sites. You will also utilize and improve existing model testbeds for uncertainty quantification and model calibration within ELM and ELM-FATES for application at data-rich flux observation sites. You will have the opportunity to work closely with a highly skilled interdisciplinary team across our multi-institution DOE-funded projects including NGEE-Tropics.

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in computational science, applied mathematics, ecology, atmospheric sciences or a related field is required. The work will require you to possess a wide range of skills: (1) understanding terrestrial biogeochemical processes and their representation in land-surface biogeochemical models; (2) understanding of methods to evaluate land models using a diverse range of observations; (3) programming experience in Fortran, Python or R (4) oral and written presentation of results; and (5) ability to work in an integrated team environment.

Applicants must have received their most recent degree less than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with the land model in the Energy Exascale Earth Model (E3SM), Community Earth System Model (CESM) or vegetation demographic model such as FATES and ED2

Benefits at ORNL:

UT-Battelle offers a quality benefits package, including paid vacation, and medical/dental plan options. Onsite amenities include a credit union, medical clinic, cafeteria, coffee stands, and fitness facilities.
