modeling, ecosystem services valuation, natural hazards risk assessment, and
forestry to natural resource economics. Our group combines spatial analytics
with ecological, social and economic sciences to understand the effects of
management and policy choices on the short and long-term stability of
ecosystems. We translate data into knowledge that can be used to inform

Job Description

Through a partnership agreement between SIG and UC Merced, SIG is recruiting
a postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in ecosystem modeling and
programming to contribute to a project aimed at understanding the
interaction of climate change and wildfire on post-fire forest recovery.
This project will integrate tree mortality data with current model
parameterizations and modify wildfire model parameterizations to account for
increased fuel loads from widespread tree mortality. The person selected
will work together with Professor LeRoy Westerling and programmers at UC
Merced in order to develop versions of code for each model implemented, as
well as coordinating how data are integrated across models for linked
simulation runs. The position will also lead the development and
implementation of vegetation scenarios (fuels management and drought
dieback) such that they can feed into the different modeling frameworks.

The initial appointment is for one year (beginning Spring 2020), with the
possibility of extension for up to two additional years. A competitive
salary and benefits will be provided. Required qualifications include a PhD
in ecology, ecosystem science, earth/environmental sciences, or statistics
and programming experience with Python, R and C+ or C#. Experience in LUCAS
and LANDIS-II models is desirable.
