Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Geographic Information Sciences position to begin in late August 2020. The position is in the Department of Geosciences and supports the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Certificate program, which serves students majoring in many fields including geology, biology, environmental studies, environmental science, public health, anthropology, and others. Fort Lewis College’s GIS program provides students with an excellent introduction to the use of GIS software, particularly applied to the sciences. Our program’s core strengths are close interactions with GIS faculty, working with industry standard GIS software and related hardware and equipment, and numerous job and internship opportunities. Fort Lewis College (FLC) maintains a campus-wide ESRI Education Institution License which provides students, faculty, and staff with access to the latest versions of ArcGIS software (Desktop and Online), apps, and data.

Minimum Qualifications
• Completed Ph.D. by August 18, 2020 in Geography, Geographic Information Systems/Science, or a closely-related discipline
 • Experience and competence with modern geospatial technologies, particularly Esri ArcGIS software (ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Desktop - ArcMap)
• Experience using geospatial technologies as applied to the physical and natural sciences
• Ability to teach introductory- and advanced-level GIS, programming, and remote sensing courses
• Experience and strong interest in teaching and mentoring undergraduates

Preferred Qualifications
• Research specialty in remote sensing, particularly in science applications
• Capability and desire to oversee the administration of an academic GIS program. This involves program administration and assessment, coordinating projects and internships with students, other GIS faculty, and onsite supervisors, and networking with other professionals at the local and regional levels.

Major Responsibilities
• Teaching load is 12 contact/credit hours per term, 24 per academic year. This usually equates to two lecture sections and two lab sections per semester.
• Committed focus on teaching at the undergraduate level, including such courses as Introduction to GIS, Intermediate- and/or Advanced-level GIS, Programming/Web Mapping, and Remote Sensing
• Supervise and mentor independent study projects and internships within the GIS Certificate program
• Advise students about career and academic opportunities associated with GIS
• Be active in scholarship (traditional and/or in relation to teaching) with undergraduate students
• Participate in departmental and college governance and professional service
  • Maintains knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.
• Produces and remediates digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned

Compensation

Salary is $59,500 plus a comprehensive benefits package. The anticipated start date is August 18, 2020.
