The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), is a consortium of over 40 US institutions and four international affiliates that operates world-class astronomical observatories. AURA's role is to establish, nurture, and promote public observatories and facilities that advance innovative astronomical research. AURA is responsible for managing the operations of the NSF's National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory, the National Solar Observatory, and the construction of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope under cooperative agreements with the National Science Foundation and operations of the Space Telescope Science Institute under contracts with NASA.
The National Solar Observatory (NSO) is seeking an Associate Director (AD) for the NSO Integrated Synoptic Program (NISP) to be responsible for the overall management of the NSO's synoptic program, including the operations, maintenance, and technical upgrades of the Global Oscillation Network (GONG) and the Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS). The NISP AD ensures the scientific validity of GONG and SOLIS data, has top-level responsibility for data processing development with the Science group, and for user data support. In collaboration with the community, participates and leads new projects such as the future synoptic network ngGONG.
The Associate Director for NISP serves as the point of contact of the Observatory with the NISP stakeholders (Air Force, NOAA, NASA, etc.).
The position is located at the NSO Headquarters in Boulder and reports to the NSO Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  *   Responsible for the overall performance of the NISP scientific and operations team.
  *   Responsible for the NISP budget.
  *   Responsible for management, operation, maintenance, and upgrades of GONG and SOLIS facilities and instrumentation to provide maximum capability consistent with available resources.
  *   Ensures that GONG and SOLIS deliver consistently high-quality data to the community.
  *   Identifies staff and resources necessary for research and support of the community; helps prepare annual and long-range plans; and advocates them within NSO.
  *   In collaboration with the community, develops NISP-specific higher-level data products.
  *   Responsible for maintaining communication with the external user community and the NSO's advisory structure concerning the range, nature, and quality of support provided by NISP, and securing their advice on major initiatives.
  *   Guides and stimulates the research programs of staff members and encourages their participation in formulating plans for future staff and program development.
  *   Conducts an active research program involving original or creative development work, which forms part of the Observatory's overall scientific program.
  *   Investigates new funding opportunities.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:

  *   Ph.D. in astronomy or closely related field.
  *   Experience in the management of major scientific and/or operational programs.
  *   Participation in technical projects in astronomy.
  *   Significant Record of publication of scientific and technical papers in an area of astronomical research.
  *   Familiarity with large-scale computational data-processing.
  *   Ability to present and communicate ideas effectively both verbally and in writing.
  *   Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships internally, with subcontractors, and with the scientific community.
  *   Ability to provide scientific leadership to peers and junior colleagues.
  *   Ability to travel frequently to national and international partner institutions.

  *   Must possess - 1) ability to read and understand instructions, drawings, safety guides, and other written materials necessary to perform job; 2) sufficient visual capacity to perform the applicable functions without assistance of visual aids other than eye contacts or eye glasses; 3) sufficient spoken aural capacity to hear and understand instructions, warning bells, fire alarms, or shouted instructions without assistance of auditory aids other than a hearing aid; and 4) ability to impart information orally so that others understand and can respond appropriately
  *   Travel may be necessary in or outside the contiguous United States.
