The Colby College Department of Geology invites applications for a Visiting
Assistant Professor position specializing in paleoclimate,
paleoceanography, global environmental change, geomorphology, surface
processes, or related fields to begin September 1, 2021. The successful
candidate will teach a sophomore-level course on Earth’s climate
and paleoclimate history with a lab in 2021-22. The position can be
extended for a second year if the successful candidate also is qualified to
teach a sophomore-level geomorphology course with a lab in 2022-23. Other
teaching duties may include introductory geology course(s) and/or
upper-level undergraduate elective(s) in the candidate’s area of specialty
for a total of four course equivalents per year. Our ideal candidate will
be able to offer both field- and lab-based study of past
environmental change and geomorphology in Maine to give students hands-on
experience. The successful candidate will have access to instrumentation
and facilities in the Departments of Geology and Chemistry for research and
teaching. These include a powder-XRD, micro-XRF, SEM-EDS, CHNSO Elemental
Analyzer, ICP-OES, petrographic and binocular microscopes, and
sediment-sieving equipment. The search committee is especially interested
in and who can teach and mentor a diverse student population. A Ph.D. at
the time of appointment is preferred, but ABD candidates will be
considered.
