Applications are invited for Engineering PhD students to join the Air Quality, Energy, and Health Research Group (https://faculty.utah.edu/u0239821-KERRY_E._KELLY/hm/index.hml <https://faculty.utah.edu/u0239821-KERRY_E._KELLY/hm/index.hml>) at the University of Utah (UU). The Graduate Research Assistantship provides financial support for tuition, health benefits, and a monthly stipend. The successful applicant will perform research toward a PhD degree under Dr. Kerry Kelly in air pollution, low-cost sensing, and energy efficiency. Activities will focus on one of three projects: (1) cost-effective air quality measurements and how these measurements, coupled with dynamic feedback can influence human behavior, (2) the intersection of air-quality and energy efficiency, which will involve leading teams of students in performing energy efficiency and air quality assessments, (3) development and evaluation of aerosol devices aimed at collecting viable virus samples, and (4) source attribution to identify pollution sources. The research offers opportunities to mentor undergraduate students and to enhance teaching/presentation skills through involvement in outreach activities.

The successful applicant will manage their research project and work closely with collaborators at the Departments of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Bioengineering. The research is inherently interdisciplinary so it is expected that collaborations will come from multiple departments including engineering, atmospheric sciences, and health sciences. Applicants should have a BS degree in atmospheric sciences, physical sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics or a related field. Candidates with a strong laboratory and data analysis skills are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates that have completed a Master’s degree or have a strong publication record.

Interested students should contact Dr. Kerry Kelly (kerry.kelly at utah.edu) <mailto:kerry.kelly at utah.edu)> and attach a cover letter (stating qualifications, relevant experience and motivation for the position) and curriculum vitae. Candidates must also submit an application to the graduate school for admission. The priority deadline for Fall 2020 applications is December 15th and the final deadline is January 15th. Application requirements, instructions, and the submission link can be found here: https://www.che.utah.edu/graduate/admissions <https://www.che.utah.edu/graduate/admissions>
