Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Water Systems Science

The Department of Geography, in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, at University Park, PA invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Water Systems Science broadly defined. The position will be filled at the rank of Assistant Professor, although in exceptional cases more senior candidates will be considered. We seek colleagues who study interactions among water, biota, and the physical components of the Earth system in locations such as rivers, lakes, wetlands, and estuaries, and across terrestrial ecosystems. We are especially interested in applicants who integrate various approaches and complement existing departmental strengths in physical geography, environmental data analytics, and environment/society geography.

The tenure home for the position is the Department of Geography and the position is a co-hire with the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI). Geography and EESI are part of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) which houses research programs spanning a broad range of the environmental sciences. The faculty member will also benefit from transdisciplinary approaches of Penn State's Water Council at the university level. The college is committed to fostering interdisciplinary research and education, and to wide searches for outstanding candidates. Thus, strong candidates will be considered across a broad range of disciplinary expertise. Successful applicants will be expected to engage with our active research and teaching community by developing a vigorous, externally funded research program, contributing to the Department's undergraduate and graduate teaching mission, and working to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in Geography, EESI, and EMS. Over the next five years the Department of Geography is committed to a broad range of diversity, equity, and inclusion actions, including direct support for hiring and retention of scholars from underrepresented groups, advancing equity-centered systems of faculty evaluation, attracting and mentoring more students from underrepresented groups, and creating systems of accountability for our commitments.

A completed PhD degree in geography or related environmental fields is required by August 1, 2021. The appointment could begin as early as July 1, 2021, pending the successful completion of a background check and degree completion. Review of applications will begin on January 25, 2021 and continue until the position is filled. Applications must be submitted electronically and should include: (i) cover letter; (ii) curriculum vitae; (iii) statement of research plans and vision; (iv) statement of teaching philosophy and interests; (v) statement describing plans for fostering diversity, inclusion, and equity within the department and the applicant's research community; (vi) three example publications and (vii) names and contact information for three references.
