The Center for Environmental Prediction at Rutgers University is seeking qualified applicants for a position in climate change impacts and climate communication. The position is at the rank of Research Associate and the candidate selected will contribute to the applied research and outreach mission of the New Jersey Climate Change Resource Center (https://njclimateresourcecenter.rutgers.edu/), which has been established by statute to “create and support the use of impartial and actionable science to advance government, public, private, and nongovernmental sector efforts to adapt to, and mitigate, a changing climate.”

Responsibilities involve the analysis of climate data or climate projections as applied in multiple sectors, such as agriculture, coastal communities, fisheries, infrastructure, water resources, public health, ecology, environmental planning, hazard mitigation planning, municipal planning, transportation, and utilities management. Responsibilities also include educating and communicating with a diverse population and stakeholders, including the public, state and local government, the business community, and nongovernmental organizations throughout New Jersey about the impacts of climate change and climate variability. Potential collaborators include faculty and staff from many academic departments within Rutgers University, including the Office of the New Jersey State Climatologist. Additional collaboration with other New Jersey academic institutions on applied research, development of educational programs, and statewide integration of research findings into climate change adaptation, mitigation, and resilience efforts.

Requirements: The position requires either a Ph. D. in climate science or a related field (e.g., atmospheric science/meteorology, physical geography, or hydroclimatology), or a Master’s degree with equivalent experience. Excellent skills in oral, written, and digital communication are also required.

Desired skills: Experience in working with observed climate data and climate model output is preferred, as is a working knowledge of a programming language such as FORTRAN, Python, or MATLAB. Experience in working with diverse end-users of applied research is preferred, including experiences in engaging state and local decision-makers, non-governmental organizations, community leaders, private sector executives, and cross-sector collaborative stakeholder networks from diverse backgrounds. Interest and ability to lead collaborative and multidisciplinary applied analytical efforts with researchers from other disciplines is preferred. A working knowledge of sources of emissions contributing to climate change and policy, programmatic and other implementation strategies to mitigate emissions is preferred.
This is a two-year position and would be renewable contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funds.
