to meet their unique goals - university transfer, career training and
advancement, and lifelong learning. Join our community of educators to make
a difference with us.
Phoenix College continues to offer accessibility to students while
maintaining a high-quality education. Notably, PC was recently named one of
the top 150 Community Colleges eligible for the Community College Excellence
Program. Join our top-tier faculty and staff as we continue to innovate and
lead in higher education.
Phoenix College is seeking to hire a Physics faculty to join the Physical
Sciences Department, which is comprised of multiple disciplines: Chemistry,
Physics, Engineering, Astronomy, and Geosciences. The selected candidate
will be working in an interdisciplinary environment in collaboration with
other faculty members to develop and teach physics lecture and laboratory
courses. Our department is housed in a newly renovated building and we have
many state-of-the-art instruments that can be used to enhance offered
courses. The instructor will teach Introductory Physics (PHY101), College
Physics I and II (PHY111&PHY112), University Physics I and II
(PHY121&PHY131), and possibly other physics courses depending on specialty
(e.g. University Physics III-PHY241, etc.).
Essential Functions
* Instructing students in introductory physics science courses, with
an emphasis on developing the students' critical thinking and
problem-solving skills. This includes using various teaching methods to
promote effective learning in students with diverse abilities, levels of
academic preparation, ages, and socio-economic/cultural backgrounds.
* Developing instructional materials. This includes creating
syllabi/class outlines and evaluating students' comprehension of the subject
matter being taught by making and grading assignments, projects, quizzes,
and exams.
* Holding academic support hours for students, with the purpose of
answering questions that students may have over the subject matters being
taught and/or providing academic advisement to students planning to major in
a physics discipline.
* Assisting in departmental efforts to build and maintain the
physics program at PC. This requires a commitment to student success and
working together with other PC employees on student recruitment initiatives
and community outreach efforts. This includes advising physics students;
facilitating partnerships with in-state universities for transfer programs
and grants; participating in outreach activities to middle schools, high
schools, and other STEM programs; mentoring students in a student club
setting, creating and maintaining partnerships with industry.
* Contributing to college governance by serving on college and/or
district committees. This also includes collaborating with the Physics
Instructional Council faculty in developing courses and program curriculum;
contributing to the physics program's reviews and improvement initiatives;
contributing to college's strategic planning and accreditation efforts;
building and maintaining collaborative external partnerships.
* Engaging in professional growth opportunities to enhance subject
knowledge and develop pedagogical skills. Physics faculty members are
expected to model the profession's high standards through their commitment
to excellence, innovation, integrity, and teamwork. Thus, it is necessary
for all physics faculty within the department to work together and keep
their knowledge up to date to assure the students within the program are
learning the newest skills expected of physics graduates. Professional
growth opportunities may be external, such as attending national or regional
conferences, or internal, such as attending college or department training
sessions.
* Working with other faculty within the Physical Sciences department
to assure that students in different class sections are getting a similar
learning experience from all of physics instructors, and are well prepared
to take upper-level physics courses at a university. There is an
expectation for all the instructors of a course to freely share their course
materials with each other and discuss best practices in an effort to
maintain course rigor while promoting student success.
* Assisting the department chair in deciding the best use of the
department's funds and other resources to support the incorporation of
technology into an integrated lecture/lab setting. This includes working
with student workers and lab technicians to provide them with guidance in
the setup of equipment in the classrooms and the maintenance of tools in
physics labs.
