The Washington Geological Survey regulates Surface Mine Reclamation for
more than 900 sand and gravel, rock, and other mines in Washington State,
and it’s one critical part in protecting our State’s long-term
environmental health and public safety. To ensure that the Program
functions at its best, the Survey is seeking a transformational leader who
has general knowledge of the State’s complex geology and mine regulation,
along with strong management skills and an innovative spirit.

The successful candidate will provide leadership, administration, and
coordination for the work of the Surface Mine Reclamation Program (SMRP),
and will be responsible for both supervising and directing the activities
of the SMRP and determining the Program’s priorities.

The Assistant Director for Surface Mine Reclamation is responsible for
supervising a talented group of program staff, who perform mine reclamation
inspections, reclamation plan reviews, regulatory enforcement, abandoned
mine program, metal mine regulation, and program administrative duties.

This position provides expertise in surface mine reclamation, identifying
and helping prioritize the State’s needs for surface mine reclamation
information. The position also prepares and makes presentations to internal
and external audiences, and provides information to the general public,
private industry, department staff, and other government agencies about the
Surface Mine Reclamation Program’s mission and activities.

*Who are we looking for?*

*The right candidate has:*

   - An Engineering Geology license in the State of Washington OR the
   ability to obtain a license through reciprocity or examination within six
   months of hire.
   - A minimum of a BS in Geology.
   - General knowledge of Washington geology.
   - Knowledge and experience equal to 5 years or more working with mine
   reclamation and/or the mining industry.
   - In-depth knowledge of surface mines and reclamation techniques.
   - Ability to work actively with industry associations on legislative and
   policy issues.
   - A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience.
   This position requires driving as an essential function.  Employees who
   drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle,
   are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and
   abide by all other driver responsibility requirements. Finalists and/or
   interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all
   states in which they have held a license during the past three years.

*Desirable Qualifications:*

   - Experience supervising professional level staff.
   - Advanced degree in geology or a related science field.


This is an office-based position, occasional field work may be required
that could include driving long distances. Some field inspection of
drilling and/or mining sites may be necessary, and these may be done on
uneven ground in adverse weather. The incumbent in this position is
required to travel. Overnight travel may be required periodically.

the Pacific Coast shores to the rugged Cascade Mountains to the rolling
hills of the Palouse. Your office will be located in Olympia, Washington on
the state capitol campus and minutes from downtown and the South Puget
Sound.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, telework (mobile-work) is currently expected.
Incumbent must have internet access and connectivity.  When approved to
return, the incumbent is expected to report to the duty station or may be
approved for telework based on DNR's telework policy*.*
