[ES_JOBS_NET] Postdoctoral research position in aerosol modeling at UCLA

Prof. Jasper Kok and the Earth, Wind & Particles group at UCLA’s department
of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences seek applicants for a
postdoctoral scholar. The successful applicant will lead a project to
quantify the cycle of coarse desert dust in the Earth system. Recent
studies show that coarse dust accounts for about a third of the
atmosphere’s aerosol loading, yet is greatly underestimated in climate
models, which has important implications for climate and biogeochemistry.

Anticipated duties include:

   - Using the Community Earth System Model to model the global cycle of
coarse desert dust and its effects on the Earth system
   - Analyzing climate model output
   - Developing and using parameterizations for aerosol emission and
   deposition
   - Co-supervising graduate and undergraduate students
   - Communicating findings in written and oral form.

Desired qualifications include:

   - A Ph.D. in atmospheric science, physics, engineering, mathematics or a
   related field
   - Experience with running the Community Earth System Model or other
   atmospheric circulation models
   - Strong quantitative and programming skills
   - Strong oral and written communication skills

The salary will be competitive and commensurate with relevant experience.
We particularly encourage applications from women, minorities, and other
groups that are historically underrepresented in the geosciences. U.S.
citizenship or residency is not required.

Interested applicants should send a CV with a cover letter, names of three
references, and summary of recent work and interests (up to one page). All
applications should be submitted electronically as a single PDF document to
Prof. Jasper Kok (jfkok at ucla.edu). This appointment is for one year, and
may be renewed pending satisfactory performance and funding availability.
The start date is flexible, but would preferably be between September and
January of 2020. Due to the COVID-19 situation, the initial portion of the
work will likely be carried out remotely. Review of applications will begin
immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

The Earth, Wind & Particles group is deliberate about providing a
supportive environment for students and postdocs of all backgrounds and
engages actively with UCLA’s Center for Diverse Leadership in Science. For
