The Hawai'i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP) is a multi-disciplinary research Institute within the School of Ocean & Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM). It is home to a vibrant, diverse, multicultural population of approximately 100 faculty, staff, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students. The mission of HIGP is to solve fundamental problems in earth and planetary science through the development and application of state-of-the-art exploration, measurement, and data analysis technologies. HIGP serves the community and the State of Hawai'i by conducting advanced research, technology development, workforce training, and service in cutting-edge oceanographic, atmospheric, geophysical, geological, and planetary science and engineering. Institute researchers develop and operate state-of-the-art instrumentation and laboratories, and produce flight instruments for space craft. They also use research vessels operated by SOEST and other institutions to investigate both local and far-ranging field sites. HIGP is home to the Hawai'i Space Grant Consortium, the Hawaii Groundwater and Geothermal Resources Center, the Pacific Regional Planetary Data Center and, in partnership with the College of Engineering, the Hawai'i Space Flight Laboratory. Faculty and staff expertise spans the globe from pole to pole, from the deep Earth interior to the upper atmosphere, and extends to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. HIGP conducts innovative research and, in collaboration with four SOEST academic departments, engages in student teaching and training that have a major impact on the University, Hawai'i, and the nation.

The Director of HIGP provides proactive leadership and effective management to maintain and build the world-class research, technology, service, and academic portfolio of the Institute. The Director serves as the principal advocate for the faculty, staff and graduate students of HIGP and supports the HIGP faculty's entrepreneurial drive, a foundation of the scientific, financial and mission success of the Institute. The Director develops the institute budget in accordance with the constraints provided by the Hawai'i State government. In developing innovative new directions for the Institute, the Director ensures alignment with and support of SO EST, UHM, and University of Hawai'i System goals, and clearly articulates this vision within and outside of the Institute. In all arenas, the Director promotes the lnstitute's and the University's commitment, as an indigenous -serving institution, to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion and to promoting respect for all perspectives. The Director reports directly to the Dean of SOEST at UHM and serves on the SOEST Executive Committee.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Director's responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  *   Develop and maintain excellence in research and training programs through the recruitment and retention of high-quality faculty, staff, and students.
  *   Encourage the development of new research directions and new facilities, and help develop new funding sources.
  *   Serve as the advocate for Institute faculty and staff to maintain and enhance state of the art facilities and infrastructure for research.
  *   Promote collegiality, cooperation, and mutual respect among co-workers, subordinates, peers, and critical constituents in the pursuit of academic excellence.
  *   Lead the production and maintenance of the HIGP Strategic Plan that guides long-term directions for the Institute and alignment with missions of the organizations within which HIGP is embedded.
  *   Maintain an active dialog with the Institute faculty through regular and substantive consultation with the HIGP faculty assembly.
  *   Ensure that the faculty are well informed, and the administrative staff are well trained, regarding Institute, School, University, and State requirements, regulations, and procedures for the management and conduct of research.
  *   Perform administrative duties including, but not limited to, facilitating annual faculty and staff reviews and ensuring all proposals submitted are consistent with SO EST and University policies.
  *   Perform other duties as required pertaining to leadership of the research enterprise, and the faculty, staff, and students in the Institute. This will include meeting regularly with a wide variety of University personnel and other constituencies as appropriate for consultation, discussion, and examination of views, policies, and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications

  *   Earned doctorate and expertise in geosciences or closely related discipline in Earth or planetary science or engineering.
  *   Successful professional experience in academic administration at the level of chairperson or higher, or comparable experience in private or public research management.
  *   Rank of full professor or demonstrated comparable professional activities and achievement.
  *   A record of strong research, scholarship, publication and professional achievement and demonstrated commitment to the highest academic standards.
  *   Knowledge of policies and objectives of external funding agencies (e.g., NASA, NSF).
  *   Demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity and working effectively with multicultural populations.
  *   Strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills, including an ability to establish and maintain meaningful working relationships with students, administrators, faculty, and external constituents.
  *   Planning, organizational and management skills, including an ability to establish effective and meaningful partnerships and to form alliances in support of research and graduate education.

Desirable Qualifications

  *   Experience in an academic institution comparable to the level of Associate Director or higher.
  *   Demonstrated ability and experience in raising external funds to support research in an academic setting.
  *   Experience in human resource and financial management.
  *   Demonstrated ability to work with native or indigenous communities.
  *   National recognition and reputation in the Earth or planetary sciences, or engineering; ability to command the respect of colleagues in research, university administration, federal agencies, and other extramural funding sources.
  *   An ability to generate an academic culture conducive to attaining excellence in research and education.
  *   An ability to work effectively in an administrative organization built around a fluid, consensus-building, team approach to management.
