*Seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to study connected hydroclimate extremes
in UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability*

We are seeking a highly-motivated postdoctoral researcher to join UCLA’s
Institute of the Environment and Sustainability (IoES) to study the spatial
and/or temporal connectedness of hydroclimate extremes. Funding for this
position comes from a joint award to UCLA and the National Center for
Atmospheric Research (NCAR) from the National Science Foundation (NSF)
program Prediction of and Resilience against Extreme Events (PREEVENTS).
This unique opportunity to work in a diverse, highly interdisciplinary
setting at UCLA and/or NCAR will be open to applicants beginning April 15,
2020 and will remain open until filled. The initial appointment will be one
year in duration, and funding is available to extend the initial
appointment by up to one additional year.

The successful applicant will pursue research focused on spatially and/or
temporally connected hydroclimate extremes. The overarching goal of the
funded NSF project is to mitigate adverse societal impacts of floods and
droughts in the United States through understanding 1) the physical
mechanisms through which extreme meteorological events are connected in a
spatial and or/temporal sense, and 2) how these connections, as well as
possible Earth system precursors, might yield enhanced predictability of
disruptive events and/or more accurate forecasts—particularly in a warming
climate. The successful applicant will be strongly encouraged to apply
their research to societally-relevant questions and/or engage in science
communication activities, and formal mentorship will be offered in that
regard.

**Note regarding exceptional circumstances surrounding the COVID19
pandemic**

In light of widespread and possibly long-term disruptions to travel and
university operations, as well as the challenge of planning ahead in a time
of great uncertainty, we are offering increased flexibility regarding the
geographic location of this postdoctoral opportunity. The successful
applicant will have the option to reside and work either in Los Angeles, CA
(on UCLA campus), in Boulder, CO (at the NCAR campus), or possibly remotely
from another location if needed. We can also be flexible regarding a start
date within the May-September 2020 window.

To be considered, please email Daniel Swain (dlswain at ucla.edu) a CV and any
other relevant documentation. Applications will be considered starting on
April 15, 2020, and the position will remain open until filled.
