Position:
Two Ph.D. student opportunities at the climate/extremes interface in the Earth and Ecosystem Ph.D. Program at Central Michigan University. These positions are supported by research assistantships as part of a project to further our understanding of severe convection around the globe and its links to a changing climate.
Where:
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Central Michigan University, Mt Pleasant, MI, USA.
Start Date:
Negotiable, interested applicants could start between Fall 2020 and Fall 2021.
Expected Qualifications:
Preferred qualifications would be an M.S. in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, environmental data science or climate science, but exceptional bachelors level applicants would be considered. International applicants are welcome.
Project Description:
Severe convective storms (SCS) produce damaging hail, intense wind gusts, and tornadoes that can result in significant losses, injuries, and fatalities. Current observations of SCS are very sparse, and data records are limited. As such, our knowledge of where, why, and how often SCS occur globally is lacking. To address these difficulties, parameters derived from atmospheric conditions that foster SCS development (that is, favorable environments) have been used to assess SCS likelihood. The impacts of SCS are expected to grow with sprawling population centers and as favorable environments become more frequent with the warmer climate. This project will characterize the development of favorable environments across the globe and how global warming affects their development. The end goal of the research is to provide a new and fundamental understanding of the underlying frequency and processes leading to the SCS development and their changes in response to a warming climate at previously unexplored resolutions. This position would suit a student with an interest in the impacts of climate change on extremes, severe storms, statistics, big data, and links between the scales of processes in the atmosphere.
Funding Support:
Each student will be eligible for four years of Research Assistant support including full tuition and a competitive stipend.
How to Apply:
Initial applications should include a C.V. and any other relevant or pertinent materials, and be directly sent to Dr. John T. Allen (j.t.allen at cmich.edu<mailto:j.t.allen at cmich.edu>) and will be evaluated as received, with a closing date of May 10th. Candidates will be notified of the status of their application by early May. Feel free to email Dr. Allen with questions or to express your interest.
