Date: Sep 25, 2019

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 1885

Purpose:

The Earth Sciences Group within the Environmental Sciences Division, http://www.esd.ornl.gov<http://www.esd.ornl.gov/>, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), http://www.ornl.gov<http://www.ornl.gov/>, seeks a postdoctoral researcher with experience in environmental geochemistry and/or natural organic matter characterization. This researcher will use a suite of geochemical, analytical, and spectroscopic tools to understand coupled element cycling in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, with an emphasis on metal biogeochemistry and organo-mineral interactions. The candidate will work with world-leading experimental biogeochemist and field researchers to resolve questions on the influence watershed structure and function on water quality. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who bring unique skills to the Earth Sciences Group existing capabilities, have the ability to contribute to existing programs, and can support the development of new research programs in experimental biogeochemistry.

ESD is an interdisciplinary research and development organization with more than 60 years of achievement in local, regional, national, and international environmental research. Our vision is to expand scientific knowledge and develop innovative strategies and technologies that will strengthen the nation's leadership in creating solutions to help sustain the Earth's natural resources. Our scientists conduct research, develop technology, and perform analyses to understand and assess responses of environmental systems at the environment-human interface and the consequences of alternative energy and environmental strategies.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will have responsibility for collaboratively leading field and laboratory scale experiments to investigate manganese cycling between plants and soils, litter decomposition, and organo-mineral associations with emphasis on the application of geochemical and spectroscopic tools to characterize earth materials and natural organic matter. Additional responsibilities will include maintaining detailed scientific records, analyzing experimental data, presenting results within the research group and at national and international conferences, and preparing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. The nature of our scientific work is highly multidisciplinary, and projects will be carried out in close collaboration with scientists from a variety of scientific backgrounds, including geochemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, physical chemistry, or a related field.

Additional expectations include:

  * Maintaining a safe work environment in compliance with safety guidelines
  * Promoting a constructive and respectful work environment

Qualifications Required:

  * PhD in Geosciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences or related discipline with a strong focus on terrestrial biogeochemistry.
  * Experience with spectroscopic and other analytical techniques is highly desired.
  * We are looking for a candidate with a strong record of independent and productive research, as indicated by conference presentations and/or publications in peer-reviewed journals. The applicant must have completed all degree requirements prior to the start of the appointment and cannot have completed their PhD more than five years prior to their applicate date.
  *   Positive and self-starting
  * Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a large, multidisciplinary team and should be able to design and execute experiments, perform data analyses and interpretation of experimental results.
  * Solid record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
  * Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills are required.
