Job Description:
To lead and conduct interdisciplinary, applied research in the areas of
water resources management, particularly related to floods in Texas, but
expandable to other regions in U.S. and globally, depending on funding. We
are seeking a researcher with experience in water resource management using
one or more of the following technical approaches: numerical modeling of
river basins at regional scales, familiarity with remote sensing (e.g. Soil
Moisture Active Passive), and use of ground-based monitoring data (e.g. soil
moisture monitoring network, groundwater level data). Applications can
include a new statewide flood plan for Texas, hydrologic and hydraulic
inputs to flooding, flood mitigation in urban and rural settings, and
environmental flows.

Job Details:
General Notes
The position is located in the Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG) of the
Jackson School of Geoscience at The University of Texas at Austin. The
incumbent will serve as an expert Hydrogeologist or Hydrologist in surface
water hydrology, groundwater-surface water interactions, and processes
contributing to changes in surface flows related to floods and droughts. We
are seeking a researcher who can provide input to local, state, and federal
agencies involved in water resource management using one or more of the
following technical approaches: numerical modeling of river basins at
regional scales, familiarity with remote sensing (e.g. Soil Moisture Active
Passive), and use of ground-based monitoring data (e.g. soil moisture
monitoring network, groundwater level data). The Bureau specializes in
solving both applied and basic research questions. The Bureau has access to
considerable physical and numerical assets to address complicated scientific
questions, including the Texas Advanced Computing Center, geophysics
equipment, an in-house advanced lidar system, substantial monitoring
capabilities (e.g., Texas Soil Observation Network), already in place and in
operation for years, strong collaboration with the Center for Space Research
at UT, and a broad array of collaborators at the state, national and
international levels.
Responsibilities
. Perform fundamental and applied research in the areas of water
resources management, particularly related to floods.
. Obtain research funding in water resources related research from
state and federal agencies, foundations and private companies.
. Foster relationships with research sponsors and partners at state
agencies, such as the Texas Water Development Board and Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality, and river authorities to design research projects.
. Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, books, and
other outlets.
. Present research results at national and international
professional meetings, technical conferences, and at sponsor-held meetings.
. Provide service to professional societies, the Bureau of Economic
Geology and the Jackson School of Geosciences. Serve on committees as
needed.
Required Qualifications
Completion of a Ph.D. in hydrology, hydrogeology, geology, soil science, or
civil engineering, or Master's degree with five years of experience. Proven
record in conducting in-depth research in water resources, particularly
linked to surface water and flooding; ability to work with multiple data
types and multidisciplinary collaboration within and outside the Bureau;
publication record commensurate with experience; proven ability to develop
funding for new projects, in close coordination with project sponsors and
funding agencies; excellent written and verbal communication skills;
demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and deliverables; interest in working
in scientific teams and willingness to adapt to changing research programs,
project needs, and funding sources.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
More than the minimum years, with specialized experience obtained in either
the private or public sectors related to water resources, emphasizing
surface water hydrology and the following approaches: numerical modeling of
near-surface hydrologic processes, including interacting with National Water
Model group; data analytics, data wrangling, statistics and scripting;
familiarity with HPC environments; working knowledge in and ability to
develop machine learning algorithms in various programming languages;
experience with a variety of climatic settings; familiarity with large-scale
models (e.g. NLDAS, etc.); use of scientific equipment to collect and
analyze hydrologic data; design and execution of scientific investigations;
