[ES_JOBS_NET] Post-doc position at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, CA
Posselt, Derek J (US 329E)
derek.posselt at jpl.nasa.gov
Tue Oct 15 12:28:44 MDT 2019
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology is hiring a post-doctoral researcher in radar simulation and observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs).
The position description and online application can be found here:
https://postdocs-jpl.icims.com/jobs/11161/jpl-cloud-radar-postdoc/job?mode=view
Responsibilities:
The candidate will analyze data from NASA’s A-Train constellation, and will utilize radiative transfer models and instrument simulators, especially for spaceborne radar and passive microwave platforms, to assess future observing systems.
1. The A-Train data analysis examines the incidence of convective and stratiform cloud structures in frontal regions.
2. The observing system design experiments utilize instrument simulators and Bayesian retrievals, in concert with output from an ensemble of convection resolving simulations, to assess the ability of future observing systems to measure key cloud and convective quantities, including cloud content, vertical motion, and latent heating.
The selected individual will be working with other post-docs and research scientists in a highly collaborative research environment at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She/he will be expected and encouraged to present the results of the research at conferences and in peer reviewed journal articles.
Qualifications:
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, or a closely related field. The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated, and have excellent oral and written communication skills. They should have a strong background in analysis of satellite data and in the use of microwave and radar simulators, especially for the analysis of the structure, physics, and dynamics of clouds and precipitation. Particular expertise in cloud radar remote sensing and the use of Bayesian (e.g., optimal estimation) retrievals is desirable.
JPL is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
